It was the Crusaders first title in five attempts, including last year's 23-12 loss to the Irish Canadians (whom they disposed of, this year, in the semifi nals) They were also the regular season champions in the top Ontario Rugby Union league with a near perfect 13-1 record. The memory of their late teammate Randy McKellar, who died in a car accident last December, helped inspire the Crusaders to their truly remarkable regular season and playoff run, which was capped off by the McCormick Cup championship. Although electing to face the wind (and rain) to start the match, it was the Crusaders that scored first on a Randy Warrington penalty kick. The Irish C anadians, however, scored an unconverted try to take a 5-3 lead into the break. And they stretched it to 8-3 shortly into the second half on a successful penalty kick, but it would be their final score, although not for lack of effort. With the wind at their back and their composure regained, the Cru, which defended tenaciously for the majority o f the first half, finally got their offence going. The Cru regained the lead, at 10-8 on a determined effort that resulted in a for an 18-6 margin at the break. Terry Wallace kicked both Cru penalties. The two teams started the second half with some fine rugby and traded unconverted try's for a 23-11 margin. From this point, it was all Crusaders although they could only translate the pressure into one try, converted by Wallace, for the final 23-18 verdict. Registration for next Saturday try and conversion by Chris Foster. With 70 minutes gone the Cru were awarded another penalty and Randy Warrington stepped up to convert and increase the lead to five points at 13-8. The final ten minutes proved to be heart stopping as the Yeomen constant ly attacked the Crusaders line, only to be continually repelled by the aggres sive defensive tackling. C R U SA D ER SEC O N D S The Oakville Crusader third team had their best outing of the year against Balmy Beach but it w asn't quite enough to put them over the top as they were edged 13-8 by Balmy Beach in the McCormick Cup championship. W e w a n t b oth y o u r car a n d y o u r d a y to A late comeback just fell short as the Crusader seconds lost their McCormick Cup Championship for the second year in a row, 23-18 to Balmy Beach. It also marked Balmy Beach's fourth straight win over the Oakville side. The Crusaders did open the scoring on a penalty kick for a 3-0 lead but Balmy Beach put a huge claim on the game with three successive try's, all unconverted, for a 15-3 lead.
