Friday, November 10, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER No-shows plague Chamber candidates meeting (Continued from page 1) The mood turned a little ugly when M ayor Ann M ulvale was accused by M arsden and several resi dents o f hijacking the meet ing by speaking at length and answering a question directed at regional chair Joyce Savoline - even though the mayor has been acclaimed. Fortunately, issues o f importance were not lost in the shuffle and uppermost in many voters' minds was growth in north Oakville, namely the fate o f lands north o f Dundas. Incum bent W ard 5 regional councillor Liz Behrens tried to reassure the audience that shovels won't be going into the ground any tim e soon and that everything from an official plan and groundwater stud ies to a secondary plan are required first. Work won't likely begin, she said until 2006-08 and when finished, approxi mately 50,000 additional M U N IC IP A L ELECTION 2 Q O & residents will live on the land. (Behrens' challenger Jeff Knoll was not in atten dance.) Ward 4 regional candi date Allan Elgar - who is president of Oakvillegreen and member of the North Oakville Open Space Task Force - explained that in addition to the 50,000 new residents, 35,000 people will work in the planned industrial lands. That said, he m aintained that a tremendous amount of work needs to be done to address water and air quality, trans portation, the fate o f the Trafalgar M oraine and m uch more. (Incum bent Ward 4 regional councillor Stephen Sparling was not on hand.) Incumbent Ward 2 local councillor Linda Hardacre rent applications, not just those looming on the hori zon, and that repairs must be made to existing infra structure such as roads. Ward 2 regional candi date Fred Oliver said growth must be affordable for both new and existing residents and he stressed that infrastructure to service that growth must be in place first. Like Hardacre, Ward 2 regional candidate David Bazar maintained that growth is inescapable, but Photo by Peter C. McCusker that the im pact on the Regional chair candidate town's transportation sys Ann Marsden, entertained tem must be seriously the audience with a Vera addressed. Lynn song from World Incum bent Ward 6 War regional councillor Kurt said northern growth is "inevitable," but explained Franklin said the key is the that Town Council will have responsible management of a say in how and when it growth and that the entire happens. Inappropriate community is involved in applications, for example, these decisions. (Franklin's challenger Roberta Need can be rejected. was a no-show.) M ary Paul, Hardacre's As regional chair, challenger, said Council, as M arsden said she would well as residents, must remain "watchdogs" o f cur handle growth from a n. regional point of view and encourage real public input, not merely pay lip service. Ward 6 local candidate Janice Wright agreed that growth must be managed and said she would repre sent the will of the people in this matter. (Her opponent, Jim Smith was not on hand.) Doug Lawson, president of the Oakville Firefighters Association, asked for the candidates' stand on increasing the size of first response crews from three members to four or five like many emergency agencies are requesting. Oliver, Bazar and Elgar unequivocally said that at least four should become the local standard. The rem aining candidates agreed that it is time to re examine the issue in order to ensure public safety. Dann received the biggest applause o f the evening when all the candi dates were asked whether they had ever declared bankruptcy or had been the director o f a com pany which had gone bankrupt. After everyone else said no, Dann said yes - "thanks to C anada C ustom s and Revenue Canada". W ithout going into detail, Dann said he was stronger for the experience and that these "tribulations" make him better able to understand what other small business owners go through "without any help." Predictably, none o f the candidates cam e out in favour of billboards (a bal lot question will ask every voter w hether they want them) and most said that a strong "no" vote is neces sary to bolster the Town's position when the issue likely winds up in court. "I haven't spoken to any one who wants a billboard," said Elgar. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I U .1 I A N D BE ELIGIBLE TO W IN A 27" COLOUR TELEVISION!
