Wednesday, June 14, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D7 B est W heels · Oakville FINE Does your Jeep need a challenge? One of the frustrations of owning a modem Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), such as a DaimlerChrysler Jeep, is that some owners get bored driving on modem highways and urban roadways all the time. The modem jeep, even the luxurious Grand Cherokee Jeep models, are capable of traveling off the beaten path as well as on it. Some SUV owners yearn for a chal lenge to test their driving abilities and the capabilities of their vehicles. Enter the Jeep Jamboree. Now in its third year, the Jeep Jamboree is run by Drive 4 Entertainment for DaimlerChrysler. The Jeep Jamboree is actually a series o f seven Jamborees in five locations across Canada. One was held in the Annapolis Valley near Kingston, Nova Scotia in May, while two more are scheduled for the Kawarthas near Bobcaygeon next month (July 7th - 9th and July 14th- 16th). The Jamboree then moves on to the Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, (July 28th - 30th), the Okanagan Valley at Apex Alpine, British Columbia (Aug. 11th-13th and Aug. 18th-20th) and finally Mount Ste Anne, Quebec (Sept 15th - 17th). Each Jamboree is open to 100 regis trants and are usually full. What's the attraction? "The camaraderie," explains Ron Baker, president of Drive 4 Entertainment "The thrill of being part of the Jeep family is one attraction, and a lot of it is finding out about the capabilities of your Jeep." All Jamborees has seven trails with the degree of difficulty ranging from novice to expert According to Ron Baker, president of 'A ILS THE CAR CLEANING SPECIALISTS Protect your car against the effects of Mother Nature's Harsh Elements · Hand Wash · Fabric Protection · Engine Shampooing \ Jeep Jamboree tests the driving capabilities of both driver and machine. · interior Cleaning · Wax & Paint Sealants · Scratch Removal Summer is no time for Drive 4 Entertainment, about 50% of the participants are novice drivers. For them, each Jeep Jamboree includes an optional program called Jeep 101 -- an adjacent man-made obstacle course which teaches inexperienced off-road drivers the secrets of traversing ditches, crossing fall en logs and climbing steep inclines. Following Jeep 101, participants are usually confident to tackle trails a few degrees of difficulty higher than the novice-entry level. The more rugged expert trails are usu ally handled by those with modified Jeep vehicles, said Baker. Only 15 vehicles are allowed on each trail at one time, said Baker and all drivers must follow the conservationist-approved and environm entally-friendly "Tread Lightly" program. There are no rain dates. In fact, says Baker, experienced off-roaders prefer rain, if not during the event, than at least a few days prior to ensure some large-sized puddles along the way. "If it rains, they're happy," said Baker. All Jeep vehicles must be licenced and insured, be in good running order and be equipped with skid plates, a full-sized spare tire and front tow hooks, Rear tow hooks and heavy duty nylon tow straps are optional. According to Baker, "If you don't get stuck, you're not working hard enough." Far from being a solitary event, the Jamborees are designed as family affairs with children welcomed, entrance fees are $200 for adults, $90 for youth between ages 7 -1 4 , $50 for children ages 3-6, and children under three are free. Family packages are available for $500. Registration fees cover access to all trails, seven meals, evening activities and advice from experienced trail guides. Anyone interested in trying out their Jeep at the next Jeep Jamboree in the Kawarthas should register quickly. A few spots are still left, but they expect a sellout, says Baker.
