THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday June 14, 2000 R e d l ig h t c a m e r a s h e r e in O c t o b e r ' By Irene Gentle SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER After more than a year of perceived foot-drag ging, red light cameras are at last poised to keep Halton drivers on their toes. At least one camera is set to start snapping this October. The two-year test project aims to determine if a camera, which will be set up at alternating Oakville and Burlington intersections, can effectively slam the brakes on red light runners. "They're going to show the effectiveness of red light cameras versus police enforcement," said Ho Wong, Halton's Director of long-range planning and transportation services. About $825,000 has been budgeted for the pro ject over 24 months. That's about the sum needed to improve one existing intersection, complete with adequate turn lanes, noted Halton's planning commissioner Pat Currently 20 intersections are being examined for the pilot project, all in Oakville and Burlington. O f those nine will be selected. They'll be split into three comparable `triplet' sites and monitored. One red light camera will then be rotated between an intersection at each of the triplet sites. "The camera will rotate between the three," said Wong. "But the casing will be there, so you won't know if it's there or not." The remaining three intersections will act as control areas, which will be monitored, though no camera casing or police enforcement will be pre sent. Final sites will likely be selected in September. With that in mind, Turnbull was on hand Monday morning to participate in Ford of Canada and Young Drivers unveiling of its Road Safety Challenge Van, an initiative designed to show youth first-hand the different precautions neces sary to operate a vehicle safely. "Preaching to young kids about the necessity of safe driving or giving them pamphlets to read just w on't get the message to them," said Turnbull. "With this van everything is interactive and they can learn by going through it." The van, a 2000 Ford Windstar, will contain a computer simulation that challenges reaction time to various on-road problems, a child seat, and other vehicle-related equipment. Children will learn how to properly use the equipment to avoid unnecessary accidents. Various communities across Ontario have thenown Road Safety Challenge programs and will receive a visit by the van at some point. The Ministry of Transportation will co-ordinate with local groups on how the van will be assigned. "We need to teach children that many accidents are not in fact accidents," said Jan Mowbray, President of the Milton Road Safety Challenge Committee, which will receive the van first. "Going through a stop sign is no accident, Driving drunk is no accident. Initiatives like this will help us communicate this to our kids." Tom Marinis, a Regional Planner with the Ministry o f Transportation Marketing Office, Road Safety Division, worked closely with Young Drivers President Peter Christianson on the idea of an interactive van. There are more ideas cur rently in the works. "We are looking into a website where kids can leave visual messages encouraging others to drive safely," said Marinis. "Opening the lines of com munication through the technology that kids use today can only help our cause." Turnbull hopes that today's youth will respond positively to government efforts to make Ontario roads safer. `T oo often people become really sensitized to safe driving after they have had a bad experience We offer a wide selection o f quality energy efficient windows and doors at competitive prices. · E a s y to C lean · M a in t e n a n c e F re e · E a s y to A ffo r d O n t a r io H y d r o O energy Y our o n e s t o p source for home essentials. · Energy Saving · Professional Installation · L ife tim e W a rr a n ty NO PAYMENTS UNTIL JANUARY 2001 (O.A.C. with fin a n cin g option) C a ll to d a y f o r a f r e e e s t im a t e !
