The central theme for 2017 is Don't Buy Into Fraud. To accomplish this agencies will carry out a number of activities and initiatives specific to their jurisdiction. In Halton, these will include weekly Fraud of the Week press releases detailing current/ popular schemes, increased promotion of fraud-related arrests to the press and through social media, a live fraud Q & A on Twitter (@ HaltonPolice) on Friday, March 17, from 11 a.m .- noon) and fraud information sessions for seniors offered at retirement homes throughout Halton. "While the specifics surrounding a scam may differ, they are all rooted in deceit. The key is to know what to look for." About 2,200 fraud reports came in to Halton police in 2016, an average of six a day. Lawson manages a unit split into two teams, credit card and corporate fraud; there are five members on each squad. The `card' team concentrates on street level crime. It laid 430 charges in 2016. Exam ples of typical reports the public make to Halton police include the Kijiji scam where som eone advertises concert tickets, accepts payment but does not deliver any tickets. The card team also deals with cases involving people who produce fake identification in order to gain access to a credit card, those who make fake credit cards and individuals that intercept legitimate cards in the mail. The corporate fraud team laid 31 charges against adults in 2016. "Those cases are far more com plex," Lawson observed, noting one case that began last year involves a condo corporation, multiple investors and allegations of more than $3 million in fraudulent activity.
