Governor's Heritage Award by Marta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff Marica Pinnock, of Oakville, has received a 2016 Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award for Youth Achievement. Ontario's Heritage Awards celebrate individuals, groups, and communities for exceptional contributions to cultural and natural heritage conservation, e n v iro n m en tal sustainability and biodiversity. Pinnock, 16, who attends Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, received the award from the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, during a ceremony at Queen' s Park Feb. 17. "Marica is an exceptional volunteer," said Veronica Tyrrell, Chair of the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH), who nominated Pinnock for the award. "She is very hard working and mature for her age." Since the age of eight, Pinnock has been a significant contributor to youth CCAH programs. Pinnock says she started going to CCAH outreach events when she was in Grade 6 and 7, handing out brochures and doing other similar tasks, working her way to becoming her volunteer role as the youth outreach coordinator for the CCAH. Through her activities to promote CCAH within her school, more than 200 students have attended CCAH programs. Her work as a youth outreach coordinator and support of the Youth Leadership Program has helped many students learn about their cultural identity and the importance of diversity. Pinnock, who comes from a multicultural background, says she related with the work of the CCAH, adding that she felt a lot of people don't understand the history of the Caribbean culture, such as the Underground Railroad, which helped slaves escape to Canada. Established in 1977 as a non-profit organization, which has since become a registered charity, CCAH is a recognized leader in developing and delivering activities and community events that identify, protect and promote cultural heritage. Some of the programs Pinnock has been involved in organizing include: partnering with the Oakville Museum during the Annual Emancipation Day Picnic and the annual Black History Month Art Exhibit in Oakville Town Hall. She has also produced brochures, educational materials and web content for CCAH. The Ontario Heritage Trust is an agency of the Ontario government dedicated to identifying, preserving, protecting and promoting Ontario' s heritage.
