The league's highest scoring team -- averaging al m ost a full goal per gam e more than its nearest rival -- pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Burlington Bar racudas in Game 1. The Hornets would take a stranglehold on the bestof-five series, though, scoring four power-play goals in the final two periods of Game 2. Em m a Maltais led the way with two goals and two assists while Maddy McArthur earned Oakville's second straight shutout with 13 saves. Annie M acDonald's power-play goal opened the scoring midway through the second and Victoria Klim ek doubled the H ornets' lead three m inutes later. The Hornets capitalized with a m an advantage in the third as Amy D obson put the Hornets up 3-0. M altais got her first of two and then set up Sarah Fillier to up the lead to 5-0. Oakville w ould capitalize on both ends of a double m inor later in the third, M altais netting the first and Brooke Jovanovich adding another 56 seconds later. Oakville could end the series tonight (Friday) with a win at Burlington's Mainway Arena at 8 p.m. Game 4, if necessary, is set for tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Mainway Oakville's Diana Matheson w as scheduled to have surgery on her knee last Wednesday, sidelining her for the remain der of the year. "(Last) month an MRI re vealed I had re-torn my previ ously repaired ACL," Matheson said in a statement released by Canada Soccer. "After careful consideration, and consulta tions with doctors and staff, I'm moving ahead with surgery to repair it." The 32-year-old midfielder ranks second all-time in na tional team caps with 191, trailing only Christine Sin clair, and is seventh all-time with 17 goals for the Canadian side. Matheson has won two Olym pic bronze medals, scoring the winning goal against France in 2012, and a Pan Am Games gold with the national team. Matheson was traded to the 2020. "It's obviously disappoint ing to be off the field for both Canada and Seattle for this upcom ing season, but this will hopefully give me the best chance to be back to where I want to be for both club and country looking ahead to next season, and onward towards 2019 and 2 020," M atheson said. "Un like m y previous surgery, I have the benefit of time for this recovery, and will aim to be back to full speed by this time next year." Pearson sends Sainte-Trinite to first OFSAA basketball tournam ent By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff Sainte-Trinite coach Matt Stewart says his Oakville high school bas ketball team's biggest strength is team chemistry and its trust of one another on the floor. That would be put to the test in the team's biggest game of the season. Fall scored 32 points in a win over Acton earlier this season, but when he was suspended due to a technical foul in the team 's previ ous game, les Loups had to ad ju st their lineup. Vincent Lalonde stepped in to fill the key role and Sainte-Trinite and Pearson battled back and forth, rarely separated by more than five points. Clinging to a one-point lead, Matthew Grenda hit a free throw with 2.9 seconds left. Sainte-Trinite then intercepted the inbound pass to seal a 62-60 victory. Jacob Aubry led les Loups with 27 points as Sainte-Trinite earned the school's first-ever OFSAA bas ketball berth. "This is the school's first year with Grade 12s so I've had the sam e guys for three years," Stew art said. "That w as their goal three years ago, to go to OFSAA." Playing in Halton's Tier 2 league, Sainte-Trinite won ju st once in its first five gam es but scored wins over Abbey Park and Pearson ju st before the Christm as break. It went on to finish the season 5-6, tops am ong the region's four A schools. Stewart said in order to be suc- cessful, Sainte-Trinite will have to continue to focus on its play with out the ball. "Defence is the key to our suc cess," he said. "We will have to fo cus on rebounding. We don't have a lot of height -- our tallest guy is 6-foot-1 -- so our rebounding technique will be im portant."
