The church celebrated its 150th anniversary by holding a sod-turning cere mony to start the construction to expand Bronte Hall. Bronte Hall, added to the west side of the church in 1963, is being expanded to double its size with the construction of a 50 by 25-foot expansion to the rear. "We're basically doubling the size of this hall," said Peter Hancock, chair of renovations and expansion committee at Walton Memorial United Church. The basement will also be doubled in size. In addition, Rev. James Gill will receive a new office, Bronte Hall will have a new stage and side loading door, and the basement will have a mini-gym adjacent to the existing youth hall. The entire project will cost about $500,000, of which the congregation has already raised about $300,000, said Hancock. The contractor is Jens Neilson of Oakville; architect is Jamie Cameron, also of Oakville. The expansion is part of an overall ren ovation project at the church which began during the 1990s, by moving the church offices upstairs, the nursery was doubled in size, and the sanctuary was renovated and enlarged. Giving had increased by 40%, the church staff was increased, and Sunday School registration grew to over 250. In addition, the church has become more accessible to the physically disabled with the addition of an elevator, handi capped washroom, interior wheelchair ramp, and an entrance ramp. Walton Memorial United Church describes this expansion project as Open Up for Growth - Phase II, and is the largest expansion since the original con struction of Bronte Hall. This room raises about $50,000 in rev enue for the church, about evenly divided between rentals and church functions which include turkey dinners, bazaars, auction sales and concerts. The renovation includes the replace ment of windows in the existing basement under Bronte Hall - which is being totally rebuilt. The basement is being refurbished and expanded. Construction is currently underway, and completion is set for Labour Day. Once the building is completed, the parking lot is to be paved, said Hancock. "We hope to have this done in the fall and if not, we'll do it next spring." And, with painted lines, about 40% to 50% more cars can be parked, and the lot can be used for outdoor events such as youth ball hockey. And, a paved lot will mean easier maintenance, and less mud being tracked into the church on wet days. The church hopes to raise the remain ing $200,000 cost of this renovation and expansion is several ways. One way is to buy a commemorative brick for $50. Another is to make a designated gift of a window or door, the stage, library, and various furnishings. In addition, there are the options of cor porate donations - the church has already received one for $28,000; promissory notes, plus the congregation's weekly giv ing envelopes.
