The flu and respiratory ailments are affecting more people, possibly due to the warm weath er and the lower quality of indoor air. One way to improve the air is to grow some house plants. The leaves will filter, clean and moisten the air. Select plants with large leaves that grow in medium or low light levels, put up with variable watering, and grow slowly. The cast iron plant or aspidistra elatior is a famous plant that survives in cool areas with little sun. Their height and spread is about five-feet. They may be massed together or with other dark area plants. There is a variety `Variegata' which has white centre stripes. Philodendron is another large leaf easily grown plant. It will grow into a six-feet arched plant with one-foot long leaves off a central stem. `Burgundy' is a vari ety with wine-red leaves. A plant with a spread of three-feet is `White sails' or spathiphylium. It likes a warm shady room. The white flowers show from May to August. A very ele gant plant for the foyer. Rubber plant is a large leaved plant that is easy to grow. It is from the fig or ficus family as is Benjamina or Weeping Fig. The latter is used in enclosed malls. Dracina or the Com Flower is anoth er large plant with long arching slender leaves often with a white edging or cen tre stripe. These will take shady areas and are easy care plants. Christmas cactus is another easy plant that will grow in semi-shade and likes a south-facing window in the win ter. It flowers near Christmas or Easter depending on the day length of the vari ety. Most indoor plants may be purchased in various sizes from small three-inch pots to large specimens in 8" - 10" con tainers. Plants need a relative humidity about 60%. Set the pots on trays of moist stones to raise local level. K-r* W 4 January 5-31 British Empire - Victoria set JOHN SIMKINS In Your Garden Stokes' catalogue includes a section on accessories.
