Come From Away is the new Canadian m usical created by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. They developed Come From Away at Sheridan College through the Canadian Mu sic Theatre Project (CM TP). The m usical officially opened on Broad w ay at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Saturday, March 11, and recently played to sold-out crowds at Toronto's Royal Alexan dra Theatre. The event, held at the Oakville C am pus of Sheridan College earlier this m onth, featured som e of the sights, sounds and tastes of New York City, as well as video, m usic and photos from Come From Away during the m usical's development at Sheridan College in 2012 13. The show has since enjoyed successful runs in San Diego, Seattle, W ashington and Toronto, as well as two b e n e ft perform ances in Gander, where it received an enthusiastic response. Sheridan M usic Theatre Performance grad uate Sue Dunstan is also a m ember of the com pany and made her Broadway debut on Feb. 28, during the show 's preview run. Sheridan's CMTP w as launched in 2011 and is C anada's f rst incubator program for developing new m usical theatre w orks by Canadian and international com posers, lyri cists and book-writers. W orking with a cast of students, writ ers bring their new m usical to life through w orkshops and staged readings. To date, 15 m usicals have been developed by the CMTP including Brantwood, which won the 2015 D ora Mavor Moore Audience Choice Award, and Come From Away. Three other m usicals have enjoyed pro fessional premieres, including The Theory of Relativity, Marathon of Hope, and Prom Queen: The Musical.
