Kaye Mao, enrolled in Sheridan' s Honours Bachelor of Interaction Design program, was named Co-op Student of the Year by the Ca nadian Association for Co-operative Educa tion (C A FC E). She received a $ 5 0 0 cash award from CAFCE and a certificate to commemorate her achievement, as well as a $ 5 0 0 EmeryDufault Award. It is the fifth consecutive year that a Sheridan student has been select ed by CAFCE -- there has been four Co-op Student of the Year awards and one honour able mention since 2 0 1 3 . CAFCE recognizes outstanding college and university co-op stu dent achievement every year. "It really is such a big honour. I know how many students here at Sheridan are really ex ceptional, so to be honoured with this just speaks to the support that I've had and the people who believed in m e," stated Mao, in a media release. As the first Sheridan student to be selected for a co-op work term with Google in New York City, Mao's strength as a leader quickly became evident in her work as a project man ager with the firm, according to the release. Mao said working with Google was an "in credible learning experience," which she is still reflecting on. "I had the chance to work on the Cloud Team and (it) trusted me with a lot of responsibility. That helped me grow a lot as a designer because I was really in charge of a project. "I learned, on top of hard skills, how to work with people and how to co-ordinate be tween various stakeholders. That was really invaluable to m e." The Sheridan student also demonstrated leadership by founding the school' s Interac tion Design Association (IxDa). As a volunteer, she mentors her colleagues in finding paid internships and has represent ed her program as a Sheridan ambassador. Mao also devotes her time to maintaining a personal blog to promote the co-op program and association and uses social media Twitter and Facebook for marketing purposes. "Kaye is an outstanding example of the exceptional students we attract to Sheridan," Cory Latimer, manager of co-operative edu cation, said in a media release. Over the 75-day review period, many com m u nity meetings were held, including a wellattended and highly engaging town hall here in Oakville. Meetings were held with a range of stakeholders and we received over a thou sand submissions from the general public. The input from Oakville residents and from individuals and groups across Ontario was invaluable as our government identifies ways to improve the OMB. Substantial reform to the OMB is long overdue. It has always been m y ambition to re-create the OMB as an efficient and ac countable body that supports sensible devel opment and growth in our province.
