Wednesday, August 16. 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C5 `Field of Dreams' season shaping up The Oakville Junior Select baseball team has won major tournaments in Mississauga and Burlington on consec utive weekends. On July 30th, the team defeated both Mississauga select teams in semifinal and final action to take home some very impressive trophies. In the final game, Oakville scored two runs in the bottom half of the last inning to claim a 4-3 victory. Strong pitching from Cam Me Knight, Brad Guy, Jeff Wojcicki and Chris Sheriff together with power at the plate (home runs from Bryan Clark, Brad Guy, Cam McKnight, Chris Cude, and Geoff Cude) were the keys to vic tory in the tournament. The next weekend (Aug. 4-6), the team travelled to Burlington, and fin ished with the same results. The semifinal and final games were both shortened as a result of command ing Oakville leads with our team com pleting the tournament with a convinc ing victory over the West Mountain team from Hamilton. Keys to success included another strong performance from the entire pitching staff, solid defence and timely hitting from Derek Friesen, Matt Langford, Chris Langford and Mike Howden, as well as another rash of home run power from Nick Manic, Brad Johnston, Brad Guy and Cam McKnight (grand slam). Coaches Phil Langford, Rudy Friesen and Ron Wojcicki all agreed that the team has enjoyed a 'field of dreams' season in 2000 and this team may not have played its best game yet! W hy Oakville's Betty Rose carries the torch for this community Betty Rose is always thinking of others - like the 120 people who have a developmental handicap and rely on Community Living Oakville. This not-forprofit organization operates 10 group homes, four skill-development programs and runs several special sports and social activities. For the past four years, Betty has spent much of her spare time visiting with the many friends she has made there, accompanying them on outings and helping them however she can. Along with colleague Harold Wrong, Betty rallied support from others she works with to help fix up group homes and gardens, and raised funds on behalf of Community Living. And when the group's Special Olympics T-Ball team needed uniforms, Betty went out and found them. No wonder this year she was asked to participate in their Special Olympics Torch Run. "The welcoming smiles when I arrive at the Centre are a reminder that the simple pleasures in life are what really matter," says Betty. Betty and Harold work for Royal Bank in Oakville. They're just some of many Royal Bank employees across Canada who take time out to help in their communities. And we'd just like to take this opportunity to thank them for doing ROYAL BANK what they do. ® Registered trade mark of Royal Bank of Canada FINANCIAL GROUP A N e w Spirit o f C o m m u n ity | I Imagine ^
