5 | Friday, M a rc h 3 1 , 2 0 1 7 | Feds invest in innovation a t Ford AIRE ONE MADNESS SALE! by M arta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff Oakville has been selected as the location of one of three new Connectivity and Innovation Centres (CIC), part of the federal government's $102.4 million investment to the Ford Motor Company of Canada, announced yesterday. The other two CICs will be located in Water loo and Ottawa -- creating 300 new jobs across Ontario, according to Federal Economic Devel opment Minister Navdeep Bains. Some of these jobs will be on the assembly line, but many will be in engineering. Bains told the Oakville Beaver Oakville was selected because of its "strong automotive foot print." The centres will focus on four key projects: connectivity, mobility, data analytics and custom er experience. The CICs will develop pioneering hardware and software for next generation vehi cles, along with products and services, which will be available through cloud computing. "Todays announcement will help provide good quality, skilled jobs both at home here in Oakville and across Southern Ontario," stated Oakville MP John Oliver, chair of the federal governments Au tomotive Caucus, in a media release. "It will also ensure Canadians are part of cre ating connected and efficient vehicles for the fu ture," Oliver added. The government's support for innovation in the auto industry means better opportunities for Canadians and growth in our economy." "For years, Ford has been a vital part of Oakville's local economy, fostering innovation, productivity and good, middle-class jobs," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, in a media release. "It is great to see it continue to grow, in Oakville and across Ontario." Ford is currently in negotiation to select a loca tion and hire staff for the new CICs. Bains said further details would be announced in a matter of weeks.
