More than $ 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 in prizes was awarded during the awards ceremony, sponsored by Ar celorMittal Dofasco. The BASEF Committee Award for top el ementary school was awarded to Oakville Christian School. King' s Christian Collegiate w on the Herb Gildea Award for top secondary school. Sabrina Mogus, from Em ily Carr Public School, w on the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pin nacle Best-in-Fair Award for her project Don't FEAST on Your FL E E C E . Sabrina also w on the Roy Middleton Award for Best Junior Project. Her brother, Jack M ogus from Garth Webb Secondary School, w on second prize for his project G -- GLOVE: An Environmentally Friendly and Cost Effective Alternative to Pres ent Day Surgical Gloves. Jack also w on the Drs. Ranjan and Monalisa Sur Award for Best High School Project. Third place w ent to Andres Lom bo from St. Thom as Aquinas Secondary School for his proj ect Synthesis of ZnO Nanorod Thin films for Therm oelectric Energy Conversion. Three out of five high school projects have been selected to travel to Los Angeles, Calif., in M ay to com pete at the Intel International Sci ence and Engineering Fair. Ainabe, w ho is from Garth Webb Secondary School, did her project on From a Single M om ent of Force to Sustain able Energy: Achieving Optimal Frequency for Piezoelectricity. Sixteen students with top projects will ad vance to the Canada W ide Science Fair to be held in May in Regina, Sask., including seven winning projects from Oakville: Kailas Chari, Maple Grove Public School, w ho did a project on Can Spices Control Fungal Growth; Paul Drakos, from Hillfield Strathallan College, The `Helical W ater Coil': A Residential and Commercial Thermoelectric Generator; Edward Lom bo, from St. Andrew Elem entary School, w ho did his project on Electrochem ical Synthesis of Ammonia; C onnor M cCourt, from Oakville Christian School, w ho did his project on Grow W ith The Flow; Sabrina Mogus, from Em ily Carr Public School, for her project Don't FEAST on Your FLEEC E; Andrew Probert, from Maple Grove Public School, w ho did his project on Can the Theory of Garage Doors and Folding Doors be Used to Create A D ock?; and, Benjamin Waldie, from King' s Christian College, for Recapturing W aste Energy from a Natural Gas Furnace using Thermoelectric Technology.
