Horticultural Society invites children to enterflowershow A growing plant fascinates a child. The Oakville Horticultural Society seeks to harness and encourage a child's natural curios ity about how things grow through its Junior Activities Program. Flower show committee's volunteers were very active this year, assisting school children, ages five to ten, with projects such as making individual mini terrariums, forcing paper white bulbs, potting a collection of herbs, and plant ing annual and perennial flower seeds. The delight and interest of these children was evident. Currently a small group of chil dren is working in one of the Town's allotment gardens, a living laboratory where they are learning first hand about growing various veg etables, herbs and flowers. Not only are they learning that gardening is healthy, fun, and productive exercise, but they are also developing a sense of the interdepen dence of living things, and the need for respon sible care of our environment. In August, children will be able to experi ence another side of horticulture, by participat ing in Oakville Horticultural Society's Annual Flower Show at Trafalgar Village Mall on Aug. 19th. This year, the Junior Horticultural and Decorative Competitions are open to any child who resides in Oakville and is between 6 and 16 years of age. He/she must become a Junior Associate M ember of the Oakville Horticultural Society in order to participate (this is strictly to meet insurance requisites). Junior Associate Membership costs $1 per year and children can pay and sign up at the Flower Show. The children will be displaying some of the vegetables and flowers they have been grow ing at the allotment garden. Any child who has been growing vegetables, fruits, plants or flowers at home may wish to enter the junior horticultural competition. The junior decorative competition entries will be created on site between 9 and 9:45 a.m. Children will be given a container, oasis and plant material and encouraged to use their indi vidual artistry to create a decorative flower arrangement. Horticultural Society members will be on hand to lend suggestions, however children are encouraged to work on their own, without parental help. The flower arrangements must be completed by ,10 a.m. All arrangements and horticultural entries will then be displayed and judged by an exter nal certified judge. Judging begins at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to view the creative decorative and horticultural entries by both OHS adult members and children between 1 and 4 p.m. All prizes will be awarded at 4 p.m. After the prizes have been awarded, the entries may be taken home.
