Disc brakes, because o f th e ir stop pin g power, are used on the fro n t wheels and p ro vid e exce lle nt perform ance and little `fade' even under heavy use. Drum brake cutaway Brake drum surface (drum rotates with the hub) Flexible retainers attach shoes to the backing plate. The backing piate ts mounted to the axle and forms a solid piece to which the shoes are attached. Brake shoe surface Brake shoe As the hydrauhc pressure from the brake fluid increases, the wheel cylinder pushes the brake shoes outward to contact the spinning drum The friction slows the drum, which is bolted to the rotating axle cousin ,niece daughter aunt The principle grand moth e The brake shoes are attached to the stationary backing plate/axle tube and push outward against the inner lining of the drum. The friction slows the moving drum/axle.
