Wednesday September 27, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 COMMENT Ads could do much to help breast cancer awareness When women in their 20s and 30s are dying of breast cancer, you've got to do more than make people feel bad. You've got to go the next step. That's why we should all stand up and cheer the latest controversial adver tisements slated to air next month on MuchMusic by a gutsy Toronto ad agency behind the innovative Kellogg ads about how ridiculously obsessed women become as they age to retain an ideal body image. Women, it seems, are far more likely to berate themselves for gaining a few inches or pounds than turn the same critical eye on their spouses. Hence, a television ad with a differ ence. You know the one I mean: a guy in a bathing suit on the beach is ready to slather himself with sun tan lotion. He is not at all the picture of magazine perfec tion: the complete antithesis of a beer ad. He's a regular guy, looks happy and then as the camera, slowly and critically, `·pans up and down the body beautiful, he asks: do my back? And then the words: You don't expect perfection from him...why do you expect it o f yourself? Live life on your own terms. Gutsy, frank and refreshing. The ad about breast cancer is no less frank. But in this case, the inventive writers go one better and use humour. Here's a group of guys in some base ment recreation room, in front of an old rotary dial phone, willing to perform breast self exams : `Cam' offers to do the breast exams absolutely free for women who are too busy or `unsure' of the right technique. Then he says he's highly motivated and call takers are standing by - his pals sitting beside him on the couch I swear they stole from my old recreation room. "Put your breasts in my hands," he says before it goes black and then, just like the body image message, a go-tothe-heart-of-the-matter message appears: They're your breasts. You do it. How refreshing to see it not as anoth er earnest ad telling you about the seri ous dangers - it makes you laugh and then, almost at the same time, makes you think. Far better than trying to shut out the messages drilled into your head about the deadly stats of not doing your monthly self-exams, the ones you tend to put right out of your head. Like year ly pap smears. Does it matter to any of us that these two tests can make such a difference to the early detection of these diseases? Not if you happen to be young and DIANE HART the mix? There's only so much fear to go around. Who, really, is going to listen anyways? A doctor once said he thought little notices should be sent out to all women every month, in much the same way the hydro bill is sent out. That way, he said, it would deal with self examination in as matter-of-fact-a-way as paying your bills or getting the oil on your car changed. A monthly task to be performed that could very well save your life. It's funny but also, as one official said, deadly seri ous. Congratulations to those behind the ads. Put it up for some sort of award: they deserve it vital. Twenty somethings tend to be thinking A: how much money they made last month and B; where they're going to spend it or C, who they're going to spend it with. Not many think about just when they're going to do their monthly self exam. But this ad makes you think. Timed for. October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it hits the perfect note and is aimed at the perfect venue the MuchMusic crowd who may think the only problem with breasts is how they fit into water bras. Breast cancer? Only for the middle aged, they'd say. But armed with alarming statistics, breast cancer society officials know they have to show women breast cancer isn't just a concern for women over 40. They know the big, emotional ads get your attention. They make you feel bad. I'm thinking of the latest drinking and Tow n s h o u ld sto p sp ra y in g o u r parks n ow driving ad that makes my skin crawl.
