The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is more than $25,000 richer after Sunday's Walk for Dog Guides - almost half of that thanks to one special girl. Nine-year old Meghan Hines of Etobicoke, who graduated from the Special Needs program in April, was determined to single-handedly raise enough to train a single spe cial needs dog. After Meghan managed to net approximately $7,000, the Oakville Lions Club topped up her total to reach the $10,000 mark. "The $25,000 is a huge amount, more than double of last year's amount," said fundraising manager Gord Wallen. "It was a wild day." Like more than half of the 100plus participants, Meghan traveled the 5K course alongside her dog Quixote. All the money raised by everyone who took part will go toward the training of dog guides. The 4K Walk and 8K Run event attracted approximately 150 partici pants who enjoyed perfect weather, fel lowship and an opportunity to see first hand the brand new Sanctuary Garden. Ian Anderson House is Ontario's first free-standing cancer hospice which provides quality palliative care free of charge in a home-like setting for residents of Hal ton and Peel. Participants received free T-shirts (from Hanes) and enjoyed a barbeque after the event on the front lawn of the hospice. After St. John Ambulance was forced to cancel at the last minute, fire fighters from the Oakville Fire Department pitched in to ensure every one's health and safety.
