Wednesday, October 4, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Promising September ushers in the regular season The Oakville Rangers triple-A atom rep hockey team has had a busy September, and results look promising for the team sponsored by www.customicerinks.com MARKHAM EARLY BIRD The Rangers entered the Markham Early Bird tournament and, despite not having played in any exhibition games, got off to a fast start against the Mississauga Rebels as Kellan Lain blasted a shot to the top glove comer in the first minute of play, with an assist to Brendan Taylor. The Rangers then added to their lead as Murray Cruickshank cleared the zone with a pass to Sam Gagner. Gagner fed a perfect breakaway pass to Jordy Watts, who made no mistake to put the Rangers up 2-0. Mississapga got one back, but the Rangers closed the door as Cody Goloubef scored an empty netter, with an assist to Jacob Truant, to make the final score 3-1. Tn its second tournament game, Oakville faced the powerful Michigan Ice Dogs. In the second period, Jacob Truant one timed a shot after a pass to put the Rangers up 1-0. The Rangers could not hold on, however, as the Ice Dogs came back with three goals in the third, includ ing an empty netter, to defeat Oakville 3-1. In the third game, Brendan Taylor and Kyle Badham led the attack against the Brantford 99's, with a goal and assist each. The Rangers had to settle for a 3-3 tie and were eliminated from the tournament. EXHIBITION Oakville next played an exhibition game against another strong GTHL team and walked away with a 3-2 victory. ROCHESTER TOURNEY Traveling to Rochester, New York for another tournament, the Rangers started off Friday night with a tough 1-0 loss against West Seneca. After a good night's sleep, Oakville came out flying and posted an 8-0 victory over the Monroe County Eagles. The game was dominated by Kellan Lain and John Kurtz, as each posted a hat trick. Kyle Badham and Cody Goloubef added single markers. Brendan Taylor was the leading playmaker with three assists, with two helpers to Jacob Truant, and other assists to Badham, Lain, Stuart Favretto and Mike Young. Graeme Moffatt earned the shutout, with help from Mike Young, who niftily broke up a 3 on 1 late in the third period to preserve the shutout. The Rangers then faced the Wheatfield Blades and came up on the short end of a 6-2 score. John Kurtz and Jordy Watts scored for the Rangers and each added a helper, while Brendan Taylor assisted on both markers. In the final game of the tournament, Dan Hunt turned in a masterful perfor mance with a five goal game, including a breakaway goal with a shot to the top glove side comer. The Rangers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-0, with other mark ers going to Kellan Lain and John Kurtz. Moving to regular season action, Oakville opened up the schedule posting a 1-1 tie against last year's OMHA finalists, the Burlington Eagles. Oakville's goal came as Stu Favretto's shot from the point was stopped, but Sam Gagner was there to knock in the rebound. Burlington tied up the game and nearly scored another, but Graeme Moffatt's glove save in the last minute of play off a point blank shot from the slot saved the game for Oakville. In Oakville's second game of the sea son, it was Jeremy Webster's turn to shine in the nets, as he posted a 3-0 shutout vic tory over the Guelph Storm. John Kurtz, Dan Hunt and Kyle Badham scored for the Rangers, while Brendan Taylor, Jordy Watts, Jacob Truant, Justin Vaive and Badham all added assists. The Rangers then made the long hike up to Grey Bruce and found themselves down 2-0 after two periods of play. The Highlander's persistent forechecking stymied the Rangers attack until the third period when Murray Cruickshank's blast from the point, assisted by Dan Hunt and Jacob Truant, pulled the Rangers within one. Sam Gagner then tied up the match with assists from Truant and Mike Young. The comeback looked complete when Justin Vaive fired a rocket past the Highlander goalie. However, much to the surprise of everyone present, the officials missed the goal. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, with the Grey Bruce coaches and par ents later admitting that they had gotten away with one. Last Sunday, they shut out the visiting Grey-Bruce Highlanders 6-0 (see photo on front page sports). Conor O'Kelly recorded the shutout. Goals were scored by Jonathan Brand (2), Tyler Stothers (2), Anthony Scalia and Cam Watts. Assists went to Matt Lorito, Steven Merrick (2) and Steven Guzzo. On Saturday, however, six goals wasn't enough in a back and forth 8-6 loss to visiting Guelph. Oakville fell behind 1-0, jumped out to a 3-1 lead, fell behind 4-3, went ahead 6-4 and then allowed four unanswered goals in the final frame. Oakville goals were scored by Matthew Lorito, Patrick Marsh, Anthony Scalia, Jonathan Brand, Steven Guzzo and Cam Watts. Twisters are regular season and Cup champions The Oakville Twisters U-15 girls soc cer team wrapped up their 2000 season as double champions, capturing both the elite league championship and the elite League Cup championship. The Twisters defeated Niagara Falls 21 and Guelph 1-0 en route to the September 16th final Cup match against Kitchener, whom they had been battling for top spot in the league all summer. Despite opportunities at both ends, the game remained scoreless at the end of 90 minutes. The Twisters were quick to apply pres sure as overtime started, and within min utes Kirsten Temporale initiated an attack with a well-placed pass up to Louise Compton on the wing. Compton's shot rebounded off the keeper, and was picked up by Calvie Vemile who deftly beat the keeper for a 10 lead. As Golden Goal did not apply, the girls had 25 minutes of overtime remaining. This extra time allowed them to declare an emphatic 2-0 victory over Kitchener squad when Katey Fahey broke through the defensive line and charged up the field, making no mistake with a perfectly controlled shot to the top left comer. In league play, the Twisters' fight for top spot was close, and by mid-August it was apparent that there was little margin for loss. With only a few games remaining against some of their tougher rivals, the Twisters needed to produce a string of wins to secure the league championship. They did exactly that, downing Niagara Falls 5-2 North Mississauga 3-0 (Fahey contributing all three goals), Guelph 3-2 (an outstanding game for of the game with tight marking and crisp passing, until Jolliffe barged through the Livonia defence to knock home the winner in a 1-0 victory. Katerina Rewilak shut the door in goal for her third straight shut-out. In the final against the Dixie OYSL team, Fahey and fellow forwards Sheena Cusson and Marina Spudic had numerous chances to get on the board, but were repeatedly thwarted by some excellent goal-keeping and furious defending by the Dixie fullbacks. As the game wore on, the wear-and-tear of six games in three days, as well as a shortened bench due to injuries to Garven and Kate Raven took its toll, and the Twisters eventually suc cumbed by a 2-0 score to a strong Dixie side. The Twisters' many successes are not only a reflection of the girls' hard work and talent, but also of the dedication and passion of their coach, Dmytro Rewilak. In just four years Rewilak has devel oped this rep team from a start-up 1st divi sion team to becoming the 1998 Premiere League Champions and now the 2000 Elite League Champions. The coaching time invested has brought this all-Oakville squad a long way, a'hd they look forward to the chal lenges of the next level. The Twisters thank assistant coaches Claire Sarginson and Trisha Wong for their contributions this season, and they especially appreciate the countless hours of behind-the-scenes work put in by team manager Hugh Garven. The Twisters opened the tournament on Saturday with two straight victories, downing the Oakville Rebels 2-1 on two goals by Katie Fahey and Grimsby 2-0 on goals by Fahey and Louise Compton. On Sunday, the Twisters' defence of Kirsten Temporale, Laura Crawford, Amanda Jolliffe, Kim Mancina and Sarah Homer put on a defensive clinic, as the Twisters completed the preliminary round undefeated, with 0-0 ties against Dixie and Livonia, Michigan.
