Nov. 18th for residents to turn in firearms, ammunition and mili tary ordnance. Residents can book an appointment through the dispos al program then officers will pick up everything from legal firearms to explosives and mili tary keepsakes from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days. Appointments can be booked through Const. Beth Arsenault at 825-4721. In order to avoid any prob lems with front desk personnel at police stations by walking off the street with firearms or ammunition, HRPS has autho rized Firearms Unit officers to attend residences for pick-up. If you choose to dispose of firearms and ammunition at a police station, you are requested to leave them secured in your vehicle and an officer will attend. Military ordnance/souvenirs should be left where they are so a m em ber o f the Explosives Disposal Unit can attend. Under the Firearm s Act, every firearm owner must regis ter before Jan. 1, 2001 while all guns - including war trophies and old firearms no longer used - must be registered by Jan. 1, 2003. Owners who no longer want to keep their firearms must take action by the end of this year by properly selling them or dispos ing of them to avoid placing themselves in a position of ille gal possession. In short, they must sell their firearms to a valid licence holder or turn them over to police for disposal. In order to sell a firearm, the purchaser must have a valid firearms licence and an autho rization of transfer must be obtained by calling 1-800-7314000. A phone call to a local police station will determine the process to follow should the owner wish to dispose of a firearm. J.
