Nothing is more open to impas sioned debate these days than the ques tion of leadership. Just what, you might find yourself asking as you shuffle to the ballot box twice this month, makes a good leader? Is it the ability to command respect; a charismatic personality or is it a street-smart shrewdness, an intelli gence, a vitality, charm? Do you look for a different kind o f leader at the local level than at the federal or provincial levels? Ido. So too, it appears, do others. Last week, a group of women spoke on radio about what they liked to see in a federal leader and mentioned a few of the bigger personalities that have graced the national stage: Tommy Douglas, John Diefenbaker, Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau. These are the men who came to the minds of these older women as they listed the traits of what they perceived to be a good national leader. And why? Because of what they stood for; what they believed in. They may be long gone from the political stage, but their policies continue to resonate today. It is the convictions, rather than the style of the man, that tends to stand the test of time in the minds of these women. But they all said image was important. "I like a statesman," commented one, adding age had little to do with any of it. Nor did gender: she certainly D IAN E HART wouldn't be averse to a woman leader: a Flora MacDonald or Joyce Fairbum, say. And whatever was wrong, they asked, with Sheila Copps? (I know half a dozen people that could list a string of reasons on that one). "It doesn't matter," said she, contin uing in a firm voice, "as long as they are good. It doesn't matter if they know how to water-ski or Roller Blade. It doesn't matter if they are male or female. But they have to be a good statesman." Honesty and integrity were other key traits listed. More than anything, a leader needs to have convictions of his own, they said. Not what his advisers tell him or what the polls tell him. Convictions of his own. W hat wasn't at all important, was what they heard through political advertising. In any campaign, they felt, advertising is ultimately irrelevant: dreadful, in fact. "It's just all mudslinging," they dismissed. It is unlikely, then, that the satirical ad described as clever but wicked about the "lies" of the prime minister released recently by the federal Tories would have any impact on these women. They would have simply dismissed it as more of the same: ultimately unimpor tant. So, too, would the criticism directed against the Canadian Alliance leader, originally committed to a high road, no negative campaign, but recently going on the offensive. Will it matter in the end to the average voter? Doubtful. Political advertising rarely works. It may amuse us and provoke us on a rare occasion. But alter us in any real way? Nope. Soon after the election was called, the federal Tories did bring out a witty ad of the Prime minister white water rafting with the words something like this: get ready to be taken for a ride! Clever, but not personal. Not nasty. On the local level, it's rare to see a personal attack although it has been known to happen. Locally, voters like committed people who know the issues; no clever stuff asked for or wanted. You get what you pay for and we've been lucky for the most part to get it here in Oakville. What makes a good leader? Here's my list: Intelligence, generosity of spir it, charm, integrity and the ability to connect with people. Convictions of their own and the courage to carry them out no matter what the flak. And no personal attacks, no matter what the advice. If anyone can do all of that, he or she's got my vote.. .locally or federally. 179 Lakeshore Road, East, Downtown Oakville Tel: (905) 844-4481 Fax: (905) 844-2036 www.abbozzogallery.com M em ber of the Professional A rt Dealers Association of Canada o O A K V IL L E N O T IC E O F P U B L IC M E E T IN G S A P P L I C A N T : T o w n o f O a k v ille F I L E : 4 2 .1 1 3 0 8 4 5 -6 6 0 1 Smear campaign won't intimidate voters How unfortunate that last week's candidates' meeting in River Oaks was cancelled. This was the only such meet ing planned in Ward 5. The meeting did not occur and residents will be unable to meet candidates because someone sent a fax which caused a fear of violence. What sort of person would send this fax anonymously, and why? The writer claim s to be a member of "the OakvilleGreen Committee." Nobody in this group refers to it by this name. It has been consistently known simply as "oakvillegreen." Does the writer think that the "dot com" in the group's web site address signifies "committee?" Does the writer really belong to that group? The fax says that a large group of "people from Oakvillegreen" planned a demonstration that could potentially cause property damage or personal injury. They didn't show up in River Oaks and they didn't show up at the nearby Ward 6 meeting that same evening, where some of the same candi dates were debating. Did any plan real ly exist? This fax is an unsubstantiated smear of oakvillegreen, perhaps targeting Ward 4 candidate Allan Elgar, a leader in this local grassroots group. This smear campaign is an affront to all of us. Who could gain from all of this? On Nov. 13th remember to cast a ballot for democracy. We, the resident of Oakville, will not be fooled or intim idated! Lynne Gough, Manager, Long Range Planning Section Planning Services Department Doyour civic duty With the Mayor and six councillors acclaimed, it is quite obvious that the majority of the citizens are satisfied with the present administration. The remaining councillors (6) and those who are "challenging" them, would like to know that they are want ed to share in the Town's administra tion. If you stay home and don't vote, it indicates that you are not interested in who is to look after the taxpayers' inter ests. So, on Nov. 13th, GET OUT AND VOTE! W .E.
