The local importer of promotional products has sold 23,000 scooters since June, 8,000 through direct sales and the remainder indi rectly through other agents. "Scooters are keeping us busy," said Colin Fell, president and founder of Target Marketing, a family busi ness which employs his sister Susan Waikinshaw and his mom Susan Fell. "They're evolving into a business of their own," he continues. Boxes of scooters are taking up all of the available space at Target Marketing's Argus Road office. "Scooters are more than a fad, a real product that's not a novelty. Not only do the kids use them, but adults use them as an alternative mode of transportation," said Fell, adding larger scooters, the Super Glider with five-inch wheels and the Mega Glider 2K with eight-inch wheels will be introduced next spring. Target Marketing is the only wholesaler of the eight-inch model, said Fell. The scooter wholesale business has been so rewarding for Target Marketing that Fell decided to donate 100 GliderllK scooters to Halton Women's Place to be given as Christmas presents to the children of the mothers seeking refuge from vio lent situations at home. "Every kid wants a scooter, and I know scooters are big on every kid's wish list," said Fell, who believes circumstances should not deny these child victims from violent and abu sive homes a scooter for Christmas. Last week, Halton Women's Place was housing 16 children along with the mothers, said Sue-Ellen Slater, co-ordinator of volunteers. "We help every family who's been to the shelter," said Slater, adding the donation is a blessing. "We served over 110 families this past year, and I know a scooter is on every one of these kids wish lists. `This is truly an amazing gift. It's wonderful, we're thrilled." The scooters were delivered last week. "What is really important for the moms is knowing that Santa is com ing for their kids," said Slater. `Their biggest gift is knowing their kids will have a Christmas." Fell hopes other companies which have enjoyed successes this past year will think of donating product to less fortunate children. "I believe in Santa Claus," said Fell, adding he's happy to be Santa for the children who have been at Halton Women's Place. "Hopefully we can put some smiles on these kids faces." Fell said if Halton Women's Place needs a few more scooters, he would be happy to send them. "I don't want to see 10 to 20 kids not get what the others get," said Fell. Slater said about 75% of the mothers and children coming to Halton Women's Place come from Oakville and Burlington. "We get women from all walks of life, university educated and profes sional women to wives of blue collar workers, across all cultures and all incomes, staying at the shelter." Many of them lack money, or can't access the family finances con trolled by the husband. "For example, a woman can suffer from financial abuse. Or, the money is held until her case is settled, which includes her getting the money for the value of half of the house, to the men quitting good jobs just so that they don't have to `give her another cent.' "Either way, the money is not available to her when she comes to us," said Slater. Just in time Perfect gift solutions for Christmas C e llp h o n e a n d s e r v i c e in a b o x !
