This is the first batch of WNVpositive m osquitoes confirmed in Halton this year. "The Halton Region Health Department works diligently to reduce the risk of West Nile virus in our com m unity through education and preventative programs such as larviciding," said Dr. Daniela Kempkens, Acting Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for Halton Region. "We can all work together to keep our com m unity safe and protect ourselves from West N ile virus by removing standing water sites that breed m osquitoes and covering up or applying DEET or Icaridin w hen outside during dusk and dawn," Kempkens added. Urban areas are more likely to have m osquitoes that carry WNV. The types of m osquitoes that transmit W N V to humans m ost com m only breed in urban areas, typically in places that hold water such as birdbaths, plant pots, old toys and tires. Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants w ith tightly-woven fabric; · Use an approved insect repellent, such as one containing DEET or Icaridin; · Avoid being outdoors from early evening to m orning w hen m osquitoes are m ost active and likely to bite, as w ell as at any time in shady, w ooded areas; · Make sure your w indow and door screens are tight and w ithout holes, cuts or other openings; and, · Reduce m osquito breeding sites around your hom e by getting rid o f all water-filled containers and objects, where possible. Change the water in birdbaths at least once per week. A map showing the locations of standing water sites that have had larvicide applied this year is available at halton.ca/wnv.
