They are the first batches of WNV posi tive mosquitoes confirmed in Burlington this year. In 2017, an additional four batches were confirmed in Oakville and one batch in Mil ton, for a total of seven WNV positive batch es in Halton to date. "The Halton Region Health Department works diligently to reduce the risk of West Nile virus in our community through both education and preventative programs such as larviciding," said Dr. Julie Emili, Halton Region acting medical officer of health in a 1 media release. "We can all work together to keep our community safe and protect ourselves from West Nile virus by removing standing water sites that breed mosquitos and covering up or applying DEET or Icaridin when outside during dusk and dawn," Emili added. Urban areas are more likely to have mos quitoes that carry WNV. The types of mos quitoes that transmit WNV to humans most commonly breed in urban areas, typically in places that hold water such as birdbaths, plant pots, old toys, and tires.
