New student trustees a t Halton public school board The Halton District School Board has its new student trustees for the 2017-18 school year -- one a new face and the other, a familiar face. High school students Dasha Metropolitansky and Muqtasid Mansoor were elected to the role at the Student Senate meeting in late April. Mansoor, a Grade 11 student at Milton District High School, is new to the role while Metropolitansky, a Grade 11 student at White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville, was re-elected. Current student trustee Zaid Haj Ali introduced Mansoor to the board at its May 3 meeting. Haj Ali' s one-year term endsjuly 31. The new student trustees' term of office begins Aug. 1. ".... I wanted to be a student trustee because I've always been very passionate about being a voice for students. I see this as an opportunity to pursue that passion and at the same time give back to the Halton community by representing more than 60,000 students. I will strive to bring forth the collective student perspective on all issues that impact students and their learning," said Mansoor. His goals include increasing the prohle of the student trustee position and encouraging more students to get involved in the decision-making process. Metropolitansky said she has absorbed a lot in her time at the board. "After having been a student trustee for a year, I've learned the board really cares about addressing the concerns of students. ".... The student trustee position is an incredible opportunity to represent these students at the board level and to provide them with the knowledge and resources that will empower them to make a difference." Her goals include increasing the representation of students on existing board committees and projects, and working to have an online student election process that can be streamed in all schools. "Dasha has been a very active participant, making use of Student Senate as a tool for learning and dialogue with student ambassadors in H a lto n .," said public board Chair Kelly Amos. Muqtasid Mansoor Dasha Metropolitansky New student trustees at Halton Catholic school board The three student trustees to sit on the Halton Catholic District School Board for the upcoming 2017/2018 school year were announced at the meeting of the board May 16. They are Ingrid Schwecht of Burlington, a Grade 11 student at Assumption Catholic Secondary and the current Burlington student trustee. Schwecht is a member of the school' s student council, arts council, the mission club and is an advanced placement representative. Anamaria Barbul is a Grade 11 student at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School. Barbul is a member of the student senate, prefects and Free the Children. She also works with the newspaper committee and plays on the school rugby team. North Halton will once again be represented by Grade 11 Christ the King Catholic Secondary School student Christina Atrach. She is a member of the mentors program and the photography club and volunteers with Syrian refugees in Mississauga. Election of the student trustees took place at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School in Oakville. Candidates had the opportunity to express why they wished to represent students on the board and responded to questions from student trustees and senators before the vote was taken.
