Friday, April 28,2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Neighbourhood dean-ups wind up Earth Week The ninth annual Earth Week Waterways Clean Up Campaign winds up tomorrow morning with community clean-ups at 11 different sites in Oakville. Oakville residents are being encouraged to help clean up their own neighbourhoods at 11 confirmed locations from 9 a.m. to 12 noon: Bronte Harbour, Petro Canada Park (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Burl oak Drive and Lakeshore, West Oak Trails, the parks at the rear of Sheridan College, Sixteen Mile Creek at Cross and Speers near the GO station, Clearview at the back of S t Luke's, the Glenashton Bridge between Trafalgar Road and Eighth Line, Valleybrook Park, and two locations at Bronte Creek Provincial Park - on the east side (meeting at the end of Upper Middle Road, west of Bronte Road) and the south entrance to the park on the west side of Burloak Drive. The campaign is designed to encourage citizens to help create a healthier town and to enjoy Oakville's natural habitats, without costing the taxpayers any money, accord ing to the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR). Those wishing to get involved in any of the above Earth Week activities can call the OCCPEHR at 849-5501, or visit the website at www.net/~act/occpehr/earthday.htm. Students use displays to attract employers (Continued from page 1) Susan Hayden said the show gives the students a real advantage in getting jobs. `T hey can show the employer much more than most professionals can because most people in the industry don't keep a portfo lio," said Hayden. "So these kids go into interviews and get jobs over people with several years experience because they can show that they can do i t " Hayden said the program, in its 18th year, has improved over the years. "The job opportunities have become amazing over High em ployment rate for grads the last few years as the pro gram has become more sophisticated," she said. As students graduate and get jobs in the industry they will often turn around and hire other students. "We've created a real cir cle where former grads are hiring new grads," she said. Ann Callaghan, program co-ordinator said there is a 96% industry job placement rate, which should translate into employment for 23 of the program's 24 graduates. Students can go into any thing from store planning, display design, retail mer chandising or prop produc tion. Hayden said the wide ranging scope of the pro gram means that the faculty, consisting of seven full-time and numerous part-time industry professionals, must have very specific experi ence. "Every teacher has their expertise and they bring it to the students." The diversity of the pro gram is what attracted Stephanie Campbell, 25. She attended the Ontario Arts College and McMaster before trying Sheridan. She said creating her booth at Sheridan, which consisted of a couch done in lavender and a super-sized pair of lips, was a more enjoyable artistic outlet for her than the work she did at the other schools. "The program opened my eyes to a bunch of differ ent types of arts because they offer such a broad spec trum," she said. F re e c o m p o s t availab le S a tu rd a y So you've wandered out into your garden and found that you need to buy some compost Well then, Hal ton Region has a deal for you. Beginning on Saturday and running through to May 6th, only Halton residents will be able to pick up free com post at the Halton Waste Management Site at 5400 Regional Road 25 (Bronte Road) 7 km north of Dundas Street. Hours of operation are Mon.-Sat. from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. But there is one catch: coupons for the compost are only available when you drop off materials at the landfill for the Household Hazardous Waste Depot (eg. paint, stains, oils, fuels, pesticides, car batteries, propane tanks). You also have to bag your own compost, so bring a shovel and bags or containers. Only one vehicle load is available per household to a maximum of seven bags. Backyard composters will also be available for sale at the site. Professional Fur Storage T h e T r a d itio n c o n tin u e s ! Livingston's VSP.
