All three areas of study are central to research and edu cation at the Faculty of Health Sciences, as well as the focus of research and development activity at Byk Canada, whose Corporate Head Office is in Oakville. "Journals are the lifeblood of a health sciences library," says Russell Joffe, dean of health sciences. "They support the research of our faculty, the education of our students and the clinical service of our health practitioners. McMaster needs to ensure that print and electronic journals are avail able to those who need them." Almost half a million people use the Health Sciences Library each year. Byk's funding will sponsor publications such as The Journal of Asthma, Digestion, and Pediatric Pulmonology. Such journals are essential to maintaining and strengthening the Library's collection so that the University can carry out its academic mission. "It is our privilege to be able to work effectively with McMaster in this way," says John Suk, president and CEO, Byk Canada Inc. "We view this as a unique opportunity to partner with our neighbor, a leading internationally renowned University and business partner in a number of scientific initiatives." Byk Canada Inc is also a supporter of the Arts at McMaster, and currently sponsors an annual student art competition. The program is being launched by Hallmark Insurance and Liberty Mutual Insurance. The Hallmark plan offers grads of the YD New Driver Program and Collisionfree program a minimum 10 per cent dis count on car and home insurance rates while the Liberty Mutual plan sees the same 10 per cent reduction applied to Collisionfree graduates. To maintain that reduction, Collisionfree grads must complete a Collisionfree program every five years. The Collisionfree driver improvement programs teach expe rienced drivers to predict and pre vent collisions through risk-m an agement skills, effective visual search habits and emergency brak ing and swerving techniques. The YD new driver program has new drivers attend classes on defen sive driving, emergency manoeuvres, driving under adverse condi tions, highway driving, how to avoid head-on collisions and basic car m aintenance. BOWLERAMA DONATION: Each year the Variety Club of Ontario sells collector pins through its Gold Heart Campaign, to raise funds for children with special needs. A new pin is introduced yearly each February. Bowlerama sells the hearts to its league bowlers in February and this year, sales amounted to $2,700.
