The program is designed to serve youth -- and many young people continue their involvement with Y Basketball as volunteer coaches and as referees. Obviously, the Y 's Youth Basketball program has been extremely successful in attracting and retaining young play ers and has been equally successful in attracting and holding a great number of dedicated volunteers. As Millar points out, "Our volunteers are at the heart of the Y 's basketball program. They coach, instruct and moti vate the players. The volunteers' experience and coaching skills are in great part responsible for the skill level, focus and team spirit evident in their youthful players." In many of the Oakville Y 's programs, volunteers play an integral part in service delivery. In the Y 's Youth Basketball Program, volunteers are the backbone of the program.
