S p e e d s k a te r s s iz z le in C a m b rid g e The Oakville Speed Skating Club had 13 skaters entered in the Peter Williamson All-Points Classic in Cambridge last weekend, and it wasn't an unlucky number. The club placed sixth out of 21 clubs. Tom Hanham, a skater for five years, led the team with two personal best times and placed third of 18 skaters in his division. Placing second was his sister, Lauren, in her respective division. Michelle and Stephanie Pazzari skated strong throughout the weekend and improved with each race. Determination was seen on the faces of first year and first time competitors Matthew Bechberger and Elliott Robinson. First year skater Ruchi Chawla raised eyebrows of all the spectators with her concentration to skate well. Other first year skaters are Steven Cargill, Tony Taylor and Andrea Tarseszko. Second year and recreational skater Geoff Ernest placed 11th in his division. The Oakville club provided the race of the weekend when husband Ross Hanham passed his wife Anne Hanham at the finish line of the 1000m race. The Oakville Speed Skating Club meets twice weekly at River Oaks Arena. New skaters are always welcome. It is an alternative winter sport for the whole family. Revving up after a slow start to season On Wednesday evening of Nov. 10th, Oakville Arena hosted a rather unemotional game between the Novice AAA Rangers and its Guelph visitors. The first period featured good offensive plays by both teams and equally good goaltending ending with the home side up 1-0. The good play continued with the Rangers scoring two powerplay goals and one even strength tally, before Guelph responded with one of their own. The visitors made a comeback attempt, nar rowing the margin to 5-3 before the Rangers potted two more to settle things at 7-3. The game lacked any flow partly because of the many puck freezing whistles, and stoppages for the 17 penalties called on both teams. Four players found the net, Scott Tanski (3), Guzzo (2), Spencer Metcalfe (1) and Chiasson (1). Assists were earned by Patrick Chiasson (2), Adam DiMarco (2), and one each to Brian Urquhart, Anthony Scalia, Steven Guzzo, Mark Borcsok and Tyler Stothers. Patrick Chiasson's 3-point night coupled with strong play on every shift earned him the OCM MORT GAGE player-of-the-game. In the midst of a five-game road trip The M inor Atom A Rangers travelled to Caledon on Saturday, Nov. 6th, and handed their host a 6-0 defeat. Kristopher McCoubrey earned the shutout by stopping 12 Caledon shots on the Oakville net. Oakville had 34 shots on the Caledon goalie. Goals were scored by Taylor Hodgkinson (2), Matt Andrews, Tyson Theaker, Brett Chandler, Joey Cicchini. Assists went to Patrick Channing (2), Andrews, Theaker, Matt Downer, Spencer Jenkin and Jamie McKeown. The following afternoon, Oakville hosted Woolwich and handed their guests a 3-2 defeat. This was a tight checking game with Oakville scoring all their goals in the first period and then hanging on for the win. Alexander Proksch secured the win in net by stopping 19 of the 21 Woolwich shots on net. Oakville only had 12 shots on the Woolwich goalie. Oakville goals were scored by Channing, Andrews and Jenkin. Assists went to Hodgkinson (2), Channing, Cicchini, McKeown and Anthony Farrow. On Tuesday, Nov. 9th, the Minor Atom A Rangers travelled to Flamborough and beat their nemesis by a score of 4-2. It was a tight checking game with Oakville outshooting Flamborough by a slim margin of 17-16. Kristopher McCoubrey got the win in net for Oakville. Scoring for Oakville were Spencer Jenkin (2), Joey Cicchini and Matt Downer.Assists went to Jamie McKeown (2), Jenkin, Cicchini, Harry Hristopoulos and Tyson Theaker. Oakville's league record is now 10-2. Their next game is on Friday, Nov. 12th, in Dundas. Oakville is in the midst of a five-game road trip. Their next home game is at Oakville Arena on Sunday, Nov. 21st, at 2:40 p.m. with Orangeville in town.
