Joia D'Aurora, Leanne Bishop and Lauren Maul, who are all from the Girl Guides 38th Oakville Duke of Edinburgh' s Award Unit, were three of the 150 Gold Award winners. The Hon ourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Gov ernor of Ontario, presented the awards. Prince Harry, a veteran from the Afghani stan War, was in Toronto to participate in the Invictus Games Toronto 2 0 1 7 -- which began on Saturday, Sept. 23. In addition to winning a Duke of Edin burgh' s International Gold Award, all three Oakville youths also earned the highest award a Girl Guides of Canada member can achieve -- a Gold Chief Commissioner' s Awards -- as well as completing the Girl Guide program. All three teens also completed many hun dreds of volunteer hours through their four years of high school. Both the Duke of Edinburgh' s Award Pro gram as well as Girl Guides of Canada moti vated the youths to contribute so much time locally as well as internationally. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh -- Prince Harry' s grandfather -- founded the international award program in the United Kingdom in 1956. The program began in Canada in 1963.
