In the semifinal they got a breathtaking 4th Overtime 1-0 victory over Minuteman Flames from Boston, Mass., and the effort and the emotional high that this game demanded, proved just too much for the Rangers in the final. In the round robin they won all three games; gaining sweet revenge 4-2 over Richmond Hill, payback for a 9-2 loss two weeks earlier. They then played Rideau-St. Lawrence winning 2-1, and sealed the Semifinal spot with a 4-0 victory over Michigan Huskies. Throughout the tournament, the line of Jason Bergeron, Brandon DeFazio, and Anthony Gomes was on fire accounting for no fewer than 24 points. ' (Nov 7; Semi-Final); the semifinal against Minuteman Flames from Boston proved one of the greatest spectacles 11year-old hockey players could ever hope to participate in. Both teams went at each other from the start at high speed with excellent skills, and the goaltending at both ends was superb. Both goalies, Chris Wills of the Rangers and Matt Geoman of the Flames turned away shot after shot, whether close in or great glove saves from point shots. Both teams overcame 5-on3's, and the speed of the game was breathtaking. Flames' speedsters Tim Sydor, 21 Barry Almeida and Dave Tumblom met their match in Rangers' Marcus Pryde, Kris Bonnell, Jason Bergeron, Anthony Gomes, Brandon DeFazio and Stefan Legein. With just eight seconds left in regulation, a heart stopping moment for the Rangers' faithful occurred when a scramble in front of the Rangers goal ended up with the puck going into the net. It couldn't be a loss, so close to the end! Whew, the refer ees ruled a high stick and the Rangers breathed again. It was overtime and the pace was incessant; wave after wave of attacks by both teams, and the Rangers came within a whisker of winning when Pryde zinged a shot off the crossbar. Honour for close calls was even. The first overtime, second overtime, and even 3rd overtime expired. The teams would go 2-on-2 with no goalies until a goal was scored. Wills and Geoman had each earned brilliant shutouts! It was the Flames' Sydor and Almeida against Bergeron and Pryde. It still went end-to-end; Sydor hit one off the Rangers side netting from a sharp angle and from the rebound, Pryde sent Bergeron on the path to glory; across the Flames blue line, and the puck slid into the net. What a hard-earned victory! But also a tremendous tribute to both teams, worthy of the final itself. Championship final (Nov. 7): the Rangers' opponents, Richmond Hill, had made the final through the wild card slot, beating Pittsburgh 2-0 in their semifinal. Everyone was wondering if Richmond Hill's short bench or the Rangers' monumental semifinal efforts would prove an influence on the game. It started at a fine pace and Chris Wills again showed early confidence. However, his team was feeling the effects of the other game just two hours earlier, and Richmond Hill sensed their chances and took them. They held period leads of 2-1 and 4-2 en route to the 7-2 win. Adam Fehler and Anthony Gomes scored for Oakville. Assists went to Brandon DeFazio (2), Jason Bergeron and Anthony Gomes. But the Rangers came away with great pride in this tourna ment, proving they can be a team to be reckoned with. It was a fantastic effort all weekend. Well done indeed! Here's the Rangers scoring for the tournament: Goals: Brandon DeFazio (6), Jason Bergeron (4), Anthony Gomes(3), Taylor Farris, Marcus Pryde, Stefan Legein, Adam Fehler (1 each) Assists: Anthony Gomes(5), Jason Bergeron(4), Brandon DeFazio(2), Marcus Pryde(2), Scott Hamel (2), Michael Morrison, Kris Bonnell, Adam Fehler, Daniel Ruffo. REGULAR SEASON In a 4-3 win over Brampton on Oct. 29, Oakville fired four straight goals by Kris Bonnell, Anthony Gomes, Brandon DeFazio and Ryan Gamble. With five starters injured and another three going down in the first half, Oakville Trafalgar fell 45-8 to first division Pearson in a semifinal game. Oakville Trafalgar cruised through their divi sion two opponents, this year, winning all six regular season games and their opening round playoff game. The playoff set-up, however, had them meet ing up with division one opponent Pearson in the semis, and the Burlington school won 45-8. Coach Guy D'Alesio said his team was deci mated by injuries. "We went into the game with five starters out, and lost three more by the end of the first half." Making it even worse, he said, was that four of the players went both ways. "We were just a shell of our regular season team." Even the well deserved win by Pearson, he said, can't take away his team's regular season accomplishments. They scored the most points of any Halton high school team. Satisfying win over Burlington In their strongest showing yet, the Oakville Ranger Midget AAA team beat Burlington 3-1 last Wednesday at Oakville Arena. After an early pre-season win followed by two losses, Oakville came on the ice with something to prove. Burlington opened the scoring early in the first period and held on to the lead until early in the second, when Don Hartt scored from Shaun Dakin and Mike Zujko. Mike Enns scored late in the second to send the teams into the dress ing rooms at the end of the second with Oakville in the lead. Enns scored the insurance goal with just over five minutes to play in the third on a rebound from a beautiful shot by Jeff Curtis, set up by Ed Fiore. The game ended with Oakville successfully killing two penalties late in the third to retain the lead and the win. Dane Gilbert had a great game for Oakville in net. On Monday, Oct. 25th, the midgets travelled to Brampton to continue their ongoing rivalry. Brampton had the win in the pre-season and Oakville came back for the win in their last league game. This time, Oakville went down 3-0. Both teams came out strong with lots of hard play in both directions. And while Oakville took only three penalties, Brampton capitalized on all three and Oakville never did get one past the Brampton netminder. On Wednesday, Oct. 27th, however, it was a different story. While taking five penalties on home ice at Oakville Arena, Oakville managed to tighten up their penalty killing and allowed no powerplay goals against themselves. Near the end of the first period, Shaun Dakin potted a feed from Mike Zujko on a powerplay which was Oakville's only goal. It stood until halfway through the third when Brampton snuck one past netminder Nick Ball and the game ended 1-1. The team doesn't play at home again until Wednesday, Nov. 17th, at 8 p.m. at Oakville Arena, when they host Guelph. Blades host tough Georgetown Friday (Continued from page D2) a sprawled out Cougars' goalie Matt Cifelli, closing the lead to 3-2. Oakville hit dry spells dur ing the first two periods, gen erating little chances at goals. The two goals late in the peri od showed some life and more excitement in what could have been a lop-sided affair. Oakville thought they had the tying goal early in the third period, but Cifelli made a great in-close pad save on Bob Jaggard off a pass from behind the net. Burlington regained their two goal lead, scoring in a wide-open net after a great save by Blades' goalie Matt Violin. The Blades then pulled off another comeback. Lukajic scored his second of the game, after a rebound on a long slap*shot. Mike Tarantino then scored on a weak, low shot after a faceoff, just 45 seconds later, to tie the game. The game then showcased relentless attempts by both teams to score the winning goal.
