Those interested in learning about Canada' s aviation history are invited to hear from the man whose grandfather took that first flight in 1909. Royal Canadian Airforce Colonel and Oakville resident Gerald Haddon will speak at a meeting of the Angela Bruce Chapter of the IODE at St. Paul' s United Church, 454 Rebecca St., Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. Haddon is the grandson of J.A.D. McCurdy, Canada' s first pilot. As part of Alexander Graham Bells Aerial Experiment Association, McCurdy helped design and build the Silver Dart, the last in a series ofexperimental aircraft the association put together in hopes of creating a flying machine capable of sustained flight. Haddon is an expert at telling the story of that first flight at Baddeck, Nova Scotia, as his grandfather had told to him. "There were a lot of doubtful Scotsmen who really didn't think it was going to fly and Gerald Haddon had come really to almost see a disaster, but it (Silver Dart) lifted off and it went for almost three quarters of a mile, just over 30 ft. off the ground at about 4 0 miles per hour. J. A. D. McCurdy then brought it down to the ice, perfect landing and taxied back," said Haddon in a previous interview with the Oakville Beaver. "He remembered two things about that day. He remembered the look of astonishment on everyone' s faces at actually seeing a man fly and the look of sheer joy on the face of Alexander Graham Bell. So my grandfather felt as if he had had two or three shots of whiskey and he wanted to go up immediately again." Haddon noted this flight made McCurdy the first British subject to fly an airplane anywhere in the British Empire. In 1910, McCurdy was the first Canadian issued a pilot' s licence and in 1911, the first person in history to make a transoceanic flight -- from Key West, Florida to Cuba. McCurdy was also the first to land an airplane on water using pontoons and co founded Canada' s first airplane construction company, which produced the first airplane built in Canada, the Baddeck 1. He also made the first wireless transmission from an airplane to the ground and formed Canada' s first aviation school where, following the outbreak of the First World War, he trained Canadian and British pilots. Haddon is speaking across Canada to mark Canada' s 150th anniversary. His talk is free, however those interested in attending can register and file questions with Margaret Andrews at 905 338-3073.
