Junior and senior girls basketball and junior and senior boys volleyball high school championship games were being contested between Wednesday, and today (Friday) in the Trafalgar Road campus gym. Sheridan's main campus in Oakville is the traditional site of the hoops and volleyball high school finals for Halton's school boards. Sheridan is one of 24 Ontario colleges where 12,000 faculty members have been on strike since Oct. 16, keeping about 500,000 students out of the classroom. Picket lines of protesting professors and other OPSEU unionized staff on strike are currently common sights at various provincial colleges. The Halton public board basketball finals were played at Sheridan on Wednesday with the volleyball finals taking place yesterday (Thursday). Halton Catholic high school junior and senior girls basketball and junior and senior boys volleyball finals were scheduled to be played at Sheridan College today (Friday). The athletic convenor for the Halton Catholic District School Board said they gave careful consideration to the strike and its possible impact on the board's sports finals but decided to go ahead with playing them at Sheridan. "We did consider changing the venue, and put in place a backup plan in the event we needed it," Chris Cobbina told the Oakville Beaver on Thursday afternoon. "I have been working with Sheridan College to monitor the situation and since there are no concerns at this time, we will move ahead with the plan and hold the finals at Sheridan tomorrow. "The safety and wellbeing of students and staff is always a priority, and I have been working closely with the events team at Sheridan College over the past couple of weeks to make sure there would be no concerns around safety at this venue." Cobbina was at the Halton public board basketball finals on Wednesday and said things went smoothly. "Although there are picketers in place, causing a minor delay (one to two minutes) as cars enter, there is very little disruption and we have no concerns around safety." 5 REASONS TO VISIT THE OAKVILLE HEARING CENTRE You notice people are mumbling Listening with background noise is challenging You often ask people to repeat themselves Your loved ones seem to get frustrated by your inability to hear them You are over 60 years of age it's time to get a baseline for your hearing levels Call the Oakville Hearing Centre at 905-849-5894 to book an appointment today!
