"I thin k it w ill be a pleasant surprise for all of u s ," she adds. This year there w ill be 49 floats in addi tion to a variety of professional and school bands. U nlike som e other com m un ities, O akville' s parade floats are n ot p rofession ally made. Julien-Sullivan says individuals, com m unity groups, sch o o ls and O akville com panies, both big and sm all, build the floats that go into the parade. "That' s the beauty of the parade," she says. "It' s com m un ity d riven." The parade is also an opportunity for the com m un ity to com e together and help p eop le in need. O akville firefighters w ill be collecting toys for their annual Toy Drive. The Kins m en w ill be collecting loo se change, w hile the Salvation Army w ill be collectin g d o n ations of food and toys. And, the Friends of Falgarwood w ill be sellin g Red N oses once again for charity, w ith all proceeds goin g to the W ellspring C hildren' s Program. Heather D ong, w h o is the w inner of this year' s colouring contest, w ill ride w ith Mrs. Claus at the start of the O akville San ta Claus Parade as Honorary Grand Mar shall on parade day. O akville Beaver cartoonist Steve Nease provided the colouring con test im age, w h ich also had a Canada 150 them e. Julien-Sullivan says they received 140 en tries in this year' s colouring contest. More than 100 volu nteers w ill be out on the streets of O akville during parade day, m aking everything run sm oothly, says Julien-Sullivan, adding that volu nteers are an im portant part of the even t' s success. The Town of O akville also provides su p port for the annual parade. Because parking for the parade is lim ited, people sh ould take advantage of the free Santa Shuttle. Shuttle service w ill operate every five m inutes betw een the Oakville GO Station and d ow n tow n O akville, start ing at 8 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. The last shuttle bus to return to the O akville GO Station w ill leave dow n tow n O akville (Church St. and D unn St.) at 11:30 a.m. O akville transit w ill also provide service to the parade.
