The event was part of the In Conversa tion W ith ... speaker series providing resi dents with an opportunity to ask questions and meet some of Canada' s top influencers and authors. McCall Smith is also professor emeritus of medical law at the University of Edin burgh in Scotland and has served on many national and international bodies con cerned with bioethics. "Never have m y friends and I attended a more witty and delightful author' s presenta tion talking about his books," said Oakville resident Rose Demmer. People who came out to hear McCall Smith speak also received a copy of his lat est book: The House of Unexpected Sisters free with the price of admission. For many years, McCall Smith was a pro fessor of medical law and worked in uni versities in the United Kingdom and abroad before turning his hand to writing fiction. But it wasn't until the publication of the highly successful series that McCall Smith became a household name. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series has now sold more than 2 0 million copies in the English language alone. His various series of books have been translated into 4 6 languages and become bestsellers throughout the world. In addition to the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, McCall Smith has written a number of stand-alone novels, including The Forever Girl, Fatty O'Leary' s Dinner Party and Chance Developments. McCall Smith has received numerous awards for his writing and holds 12 honou rary doctorates from universities in Europe and North America. In 2 0 0 7 he received a CBE for services to literature and in 2011 was honoured by the president of Botswana for services through literature to the country. In 2015 he received the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction.
