Celebrate with Parang and Steelpan Concert in Oakville Join the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) for an afternoon of Caribbean folk music at the Parang and Steelpan Concert on Sunday, Dec. 3. The free concert, which runs from 1-3 p.m., will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC). The concert features a guest performance by La Petite Musicale. For most West Indians, especially Trinidadians and Tobagonians, the name La Petite Musicale is synonymous with the immortal Olive Walke and the legendary folk choir that she founded in Port of Spain more than a half century ago. In 1969, La Petite Musicale of Toronto was established by a core group of members from the parent company in Trinidad and Tobago. Since that time, the membership has changed, but the high calibre of performances has withstood the test of time under the directorship of Lindy Burgess. Under his leadership, the group continues to emulate the feats of its fabled parent counterpart, and in many respects has far surpassed expectations because of its own admirable efforts and accomplishments. These include appearances at major theatre locations, as well as television, cultural and international programs across Ontario and the United States and their annual Christmas production. La Petite Musicale's repertoire includes traditional Spanish and French folk songs, gospel, classical renditions, calypso and parang. To date, La Petite Musicale has produced two recorded collections of their repertoire -- Caribfolk in 1977 followed by Through the Seasons in 1986. The QEPCCC is located at 2302 Bridge Rd. in Oakville.
