Com m it to safe and sober driving continued from p.6 well as other guests, to a reception on Parlia ment Hill Nov. 2 for the national launch of the campaign and gave a speech in the House of Commons about the importance of Project Red Ribbon. I am committed to doing my part to com bat impaired driving. I have had the opportunity to study the is sue as a member of the Public Safety and Na tional Security Committee. In May, I gave a speech in the House of Commons on Bill C -46, our government' s bill to combat impaired driving which, if passed, would protect public health and safety by creating new and stronger laws to deter and severely punish impaired drivers and provide law enforcement with the necessary resources to improve detection and prosecution of im paired drivers. To support proposed Bill C -46, the govern ment has committed up to $161 million to train frontline officers in how to recognize the signs and symptoms of drug-impaired driving, building law enforcement capacity across the country, providing access to drug screening devices, developing policy, bolster ing research and raising public awareness about the dangers of drug-impaired driving. Our government is toughening laws to en force a zero-tolerance approach for those driv ing under the influence of cannabis and other drugs, announcing in September up to $ 2 7 4 million to support law enforcement and bor der efforts to detect and deter drug-impaired driving and enforce proposed cannabis legal ization and regulation. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is 100 per cent preventable, which is why our government fully supports the MADD Red Ribbon Campaign and has taken steps to prevent impaired driving through leg islation like Bill C-46. I encourage all of you to wear a red ribbon and commit to safe and sober driving this hol iday season and always. -- Pam D am ojj is M ember o f Parliament fo r Oakville North-Burlington.
