You never know w Oakville North-Burlington MP Pam Damoff is calling on everyone to participate in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The annual initiative, which officially kicked off Nov 25, encourages people to reflect on the impact gender-based violence has on individuals, families and communities. This year' s theme #MyActionsMatter also reminds people everyone has a role to play in preventing and addressing gender-based violence. Participants can show support by wearing orange between now and Dec. 10 in honour of the SecretaryGeneral' s Campaign UNiTE to End Violence Against women and girls. Damoff, who is vice chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, noted sexism and misogyny contribute to violence, and that gender-based violence grows from a culture that devalues women and femininity -- through sexist MP Pam Damoff jokes, derogatory language and the portrayal of women as objects. "Violence continues to affect countless diverse populations, including women and girls, each and every day in our country," stated Damoff in a press release. "During the 16 Days of Activism Against GenderBased Violence, I encourage everyone to take concrete steps to further question, call out, and speak up against acts of gender-based violence. We all have a role to play and together, we can reduce and eliminate incidences of gender-based violence in our communities." The evidence supporting the need for change is considerable with an estimated one in three women experiencing some form of sexual violence at some point in her lifetime. In addition to the human costs, intimate partner violence and sexual assault costs the federal government more than $12 billion a year. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence initiative started Nov 25 with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs until International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. They also included the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Dec. 6, which marks the anniversary of the 1989 Montreal Massacre. Canadians can share the ways in which we can all be part of the solution to end gender-based violence on social media using the hashtag #MyActionsMatter.
