The new Lakeshore Road bridge spanning Sixteen Mile Creek features a new surface -- textured to increase traction in adverse winter weather. According to Dan Cozzi, director of engineering and construction for the Town of Oakville, it features a wearing surface of silica-based cement that it is relatively new in the industry, but has been used by the Ministry Transportation of Ontario (M TO) several times. The new surface replaces the previous concrete. While the new surface is more coarse with transverse finish grooves, it is said to smooth a little over time as more traffic drives over it. As the finish is more coarse, there is more friction for tires, which is assumed to increase traction in slippery conditions, though the Town has yet to obtain data to substantiate that currently, according to Cozzi.
