Murray Belford Photo Auld Raps 'Bad Apples' In Motelmen's Barrel Motel operators who n e g l e c t to honor ex change on American dollars are perpetra tors of an " appallingly shoody trick,* said the Honourable James Auld, Minister of Tourism and Information. Addressing delegates to the annual convention of the Ontario Motel As sociation in T oronto, the Minister maintained that U.S. visitors have every r i g h t to expect when their dollar is pegged at a premium they will re- ceve that premium. " What is more,* he said, " the premium in many cases is the rea son they decided to come. And by not paying it, you are building up irrepar able ill will.* Mr. Auld recalled how last year, at a combined meeting of motelmen and hotelmen, he had scored operators • who give the industry a bad name. " Today, I feel I must repeat and re-empha size this," he said, be cause of the complaints we continue to receive.* In addition to failure to pay exchange , the M i n i s t e r said com plaints fall into yet two other categories -- in consistent s e 11 i ng of rates w i th in a given establishment, and a lack of qua l i t y in either accommodations or ser vices. " When I mention rate fluctuations as the sec ond poor practice," Mr. Auld explained, " I was not, of course, referring to seasonal adjustments. What I am aiming at is the hiking and dropping of rates on a daily and hourly basis, depending on what the traffic will bear.* He said this tends to f r a c t u r e confidence wi th in the travelling public and added that he knew of s e v e r a l ex amples ofoperators who have deliberately posted " no vacancy" signs early in the day. Then, in late afternoon, " they set ex orbitantly high rates which the tired traveller has little choice but to accept or move wearily on to the next town." The third complaint -- inadequate services or a c c o m modation -- was one he cites as re curring throughout the tourist indus t r y , not merely in motel opera tions. " What it boils down to is that the day of the m a r g i n a l operator is over," he said. "As our tourists become sophis ticated and have more money to spend, they no l o n g e r will a c c e p t second best -- and they shouldn' t have to."
