Wednesday, October 6, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B5 Enjoy musical theatre tunes Tom Oliver and Voice Con cepts will present Voices in the Night XVII, directed by Tom Oliver and accompanied by Linda Fletcher, at 7:30 p.m. Sat urday, Oct. 16th and Sunday, Oct. 17th. This concert will feature musical theatre favourites from musicals such as West Side Story and Ragtime at Walton Memori al United Church, 2489 Lakeshore Rd. W. in Bronte. Tickets are $12 and are avail able by calling 827-1634 or 845- 5076. All proceeds will go for the expansion of the community hall at Walton United, which includes a stage and mini-gym. Voices in the Night is a group of singers that gives concerts to raise money for various charities. Four hands, four feet - duet by Dutch organists (Continued from page B6) in school - English, French, German, and, of course, Dutch," added Diepenhorst. "We are a small country, and we have to do it for business." Diepenhorst, who began taking organ lessons at about age six, met Verhage a few years later. "Someone told me, 'You have to go to Rinus (Ver hage) for organ lessons.' So I did. And I stayed for eight years, until I went to university," the 28-year- old explained with a laugh. One of the first concerts Diepenhorst participated in after university was the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands. And he's been the organist for the Soli Deo Gloria choir ever since. The young musician is also an expert on old organs, edits a magazine on the subject and acts as an advisor to the Reform Church in his country on antique organs. "During the 17th and 18th centuries, it was com mon for rich families to have house organs," he said. "Rinus has an organ in his home, in his garage actually." Although Verhage is the choir director, he is, of course, an organist as well, and he teaches about 300 students back home how to play the imposing musical instrument. Diepenhorst has one CD to his credit - 16th cen tury music; Verhage has several. During their Ontario tour, the two did manage to play a few duets at their concerts - four hands, four feet. "Each concert is different," said Verhage, explaining that the Dutch choir brought about 30 to 40 songs from their repertoire to Canada so they could present a variety of music at each concert. The Knox choir also performed at the concerts - some songs on their own, some with the Dutch choir. With the concerts over, and the tour behind them, the Hiemingas are anxious to visit Holland and meet the families of the two men who spent 10 days sharing their home. Jan Hieminga, who was bom and raised in Holland, came to Canada 26 years ago. And now that the couple's children are grown and Jan has retired from his govern ment job, both Jan and Lynne are students, earning their Master of Divinity degrees - Jan focusing on parish ministry, Lynne on institutional. But, they still found time to bil let people from Holland for 10 days. "I said we'd be glad to take a couple," Lynne recalled, with a laugh, explaining that she had meant a married couple. Instead they got a cou ple of men, men whose wives were unable to make the trip with them. "Luckily our daughter went back to university, so we had another empty room...I don't know how we ended up with the honour of having them (the choir director and organist) with us, but it was a privi lege." The Soli Deo Gloria choir flew back home on Monday afternoon.
