Not kid ding." Halton police responded to the scene where they found Porte near the front door, smoking a cigarette and talking on the phone to the 911 operator. He was arrested with out incident and taken from the scene to the Oak ville police station. Police found Wilson on a landing at the bottom of the home's basement stairs. All attempts to revive her failed. The jury heard from multiple Halton police offi cers who testified that Porte made incriminating statements to them as he was taken to the station. Const. Lance Martin, who had Porte in the back of his police SUV, testified Porte said, "I watched her die, eh" and "she deserved to die." As the drive continued Martin testified Porte made additional state ments. Martin claimed Porte called Wilson's death a "mercy killing" and asked, "have you ever had a mur derer in your car?" As they approached the station, Porte reportedly asked, "Is she dead? I just want to make sure." Special constables Craig Sellis and Mark Coll ing, who took custody of Porte at the Oakville police station, testified that, as Porte was brought out of the police cruiser, the ac cused said, "She needed to be put down."
