"This million-dollar diagnostic cen tre will enable our hospital to provide more modem specialized testing ser vices for our growing community," said Oakville MPP Gary Carr. OTMH's current diagnostic imag ing facilities have grown over the years since the 1960's, although the last major renovations occurred in the 1970's. Hospital Board chair Christa Wessel said this week's capital funding will allow the project to commence very shortly. (Matching funds will be raised in the community.) "The Ministry ... is to be commend ed for their foresight to invest in the enhancement of these services," said Wessel. The province has already given more than $5 million to Halton Healthcare Services, the umbrella organization overseeing both OTMH and Milton District Hospital. That money is being put to use expanding emergency department and ambulatory care facilities and to add more rehabil itation, mental health and complex continuing care capacity. "This centre is good news for women in Halton Region and an important step in the province's expan sion of health services for women," said Jane Pepino, chair of the Women's Health Council of Ontario, which was created by the province in January 1998 to ensure the health care system is responsive to the needs of women. "I'm not aware of a successful case in Ontario involving a social host's liability." He said similar cases have been attempted but facts have not been sub stantiated to find the liability of social hosts (ie. persons serving drinks to acquaintances or at private parties). Bars have been found liable for serving alcohol, but not social hosts,, noted Abraham. "Juries are reluctant to find liabili ty because they have been in the same position themselves," said the lawyer. Abraham said the accident has posed a severe physical and financial hardship for Dryden, now 19, and his family. The delay between the accident and filing of the lawsuit is not unusu al, said the lawyer. "A lot of time was required to wait for the injured party to get better." Abraham confirmed defendants have claimed Dryden was not wear ing a seatbelt when the accident occurred. But the lawyer would not comment on the accuracy of these claims. McCaw's mother confirmed his family has also filed a lawsuit. However, she did not believe the fig ure was close to the $10.1 million total reported elsewhere. She refused to comment further or provide the name of the McCaw family's lawyer. The case is slated to be heard in Hamilton in November. Civic Scene Thursday, Aug.
