Pond tour offers opportunity to see private spaces Homeowners opening their yards in special RBG fundraising event By Melanie Brooks SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A crystal-clear stream, a serene waterfall, crisp foliage, birds chirping happily-all in the comfort of your own backyard. Or, in this case, someone else's backyard. Greg Kemp, a university business student, owns The Pond Broker, a pond design and construction company, is holding a pond tour Saturday, of Oakville, Burlington, Ancaster and Stoney Creek ponds. Most of the ponds were constructed by Kemp's company and have agreed to open their properties for the tour. According to Kemp, ponds are becoming an increasingly-popular focal point for a back or front yard landscape. "They're growing in popularity every day," he said. "People are spend ing more time in their homes and back yards. Ponds bring a little bit of nature back into the backyard. A water feature has an attraction of its own." The ponds average 3m x 4m and have rock bottoms for a more natural look. "A few of them have streams that attract birds and the pond in my own backyard has a dramatic tumbling waterfall," said Kemp. Participants of the self-guided tour will receive a map detailing the loca tions of the ponds and can see them at their own pace. An interpreter will be at each pond to answer questions and pro vide information on the pond. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the RBG administration desk, 680 Plains Rd. in Burlington or by calling The Pond Broker at 1-905- 545-7663.
