Ensuring that the turn of the centu ry date change is properly handled has been a priority for the Region, whose Y2K Project Team has been making extensive preparations since May 1998. 'T he Region is working hard to ensure that Halton is well prepared for Y2K and that critical and essential ser vices to the citizens of Halton continue uninterrupted before and after the Year 2000," said Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline. Director of Technology Services Jane MacGaskill agrees. "We are con fident in our ability to be Y2K ready by September. Nevertheless, we are developing contingency plans so that the Region will be fully prepared to provide service to Halton residents in the event of any major Y2K-related incident." Special emphasis has been placed on services that directly impact the health and safety of residents and staff. Bell Canada, for example, has con firmed that its 911 network - which handles all 911 calls in Ontario - is Y2K compliant. The Oakville Heritage Trust, for example, was established in 1997 and is now fully engaged in pre serving the town's heritage and ensuring future growth complements this legacy. Projects started by the local Trust include the Oakville Heritage Trail, which was created to pre serve and offer the enjoyment of the municipality's natural and cultural heritage. As the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail enters its fifth year, 25 additional kilometres of trail have been added between Stoney Creek and Trenton; the trail has been extended into the Niagara Peninsula to Niagara-on-the-Lake and plans are under way to extend it eastward to Gananoque. When complete around the Canadian side of Lake Ontario, the trail will pass through 37 municipalities for a total length of approximately 650 kms. It already links countless natural areas, parks and promenades plus marinas, hundreds of historic sites and an assortment of museums, art galleries and more. In Oakville, the route includes the Larry Cain Trail - a dedicated stretch of property starting at the (S e e 'P a r tn e rs ' p a g e 2 ) HANDS ACROSS THE WORLD: The second annual Hands Across the World Celebration held on the weekend at the St. Volodymyr Centre was a showcase for our multi-cultural com munity. According to O PP's Burlington Detachment, the incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes east of Trafalgar Road. A 2000 Western Star transport truck driven by Ken D alm er of M ississauga was traveling east- bound when it changed lanes and struck the rear o f a 1995 Chev dri ven by Farokh Harucha of Oakville. The car lost control in front of the transport, which forced the truck to brake hard. This caused a steel coil to break away from the trailer, become uncoiled and block three lanes of traffic. Blood typing program Friday A blood typing session will be held at Oakville Place on Aug. 20th by Canadian Blood Services, in hopes of attracting new blood donors while at the same time telling members of the public what their blood type is. The public can find out whether they are O, A, B or AB. The session will be held near the Sears Court from 4 to 8 p.m. Only 4% of the adult Canadian popu lation donate blood. The need for blood is ongoing, says Canadian Blood Services. Dalmer was charged with care less driving and insecure load. Two passengers in the car were taken to hospital with m inor injuries. The QEW was closed for three hours. Any witnesses to the accident are encouraged to contact C onstable Douglas at 681-2511.
