NEWS Council passes additional protection measures for Glen Abbey Measures dictate what can be built at Glen Abbey DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com Oakville's Glen Abbey Golf Course has received additional protection from potential development. The Town of Oakville convened a special meet ing of the planning and de velopment council Mon day, Jan. 30 where they vot ed unanimously to pass various measures includ ing a zoning bylaw amend ment, Official Plan amend ment and Conservation Plan all aimed at restrict ing what can be built at the world renowned golf course. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said the protection measures are part of a long process, dating back to 2009, intended to conserve the important heritage fea tures of the property. "Conserving the heri tage assets of our commu nity is of fundamental con cern for our residents and their associations. Our res idents' associations have been working with us over the past 10 years on the de velopment of the town's Cultural Heritage Strategy and over the past two years on the study of potential cultural heritage land scapes," said Burton. "Last year they all spoke in support of Oakville council's decision to de clare the Glen Abbey Golf Course property a cultural heritage landscape after the assessment was com pleted . Our residents all over town have told me they are pleased to see a conservation plan that is simple and would permit the golf course to continue to host the Canadian Open and that conserves the im portant heritage value of the property." There has been consid erable interest in the fu ture of the Glen Abbey Golf Course property ever since owner ClubLink an nounced plans to build 3,222 residential units at the site, including nine apartment buildings be tween nine and 12 storeys. Under the new protec tion measures no such structures could be devel oped at Glen Abbey. The zoning bylaw amendment regulates the use of the 1333 Dorval Dr., property and the erection, location, and use of build ings and structures there on to ensure the heritage attributes of the site are re tained. The Conservation Plan would have a similar im pact, essentially requiring that any proposed develop ment on the property first receive the approval of the town. Town staff said the pro tection measures would not interfere with the rou tine operations of the golf course. The vote on the protec tion measures follows a cultural heritage assess ment, which found the Glen Abbey property to have local, provincial and national significance. It also follows a unani mous council decision to designate the property un der the Ontario Heritage Act on Dec. 20. The town heard from numerous delegations during the Jan. 30 meeting including representatives from the Joshua Creek, Oakville Lakeside, Trafal gar Chartwell, Chartwell Maple Grove and Fairway Hills residents' association and the Oakvillegreen Conservation Association. All supported the pro tection measures. Fraser Damoff of the • See LAWYER, page 67 Disabled Benefits?D e n ie d In ju re d ? I C A N H E L P .
