Det. Mark Underwood of the Halton police fraud unit said this type of scam is not uncom- mon with similar variations re ported within the region about twice a month. He pointed out this type of scam is difficult to investigate as it is virtually impossible to determine where the fraudster was calling from and noted once the money has been wired over seas there is no hope of getting it back. Underwood also said the sce nario outlined by this fraudster would never happen in reality. "The police or the banks wouldn't use a random custom- er in this type of investigation to assist them. If anything we could create a fictitious person if we were going to do anything like this," he said. "There is no need for us to use a real person's account. The need for additional capacity at the West River wastewater pumping station was identified in the 2011 Sustainable Halton Water and Wastewater Master Plan. Process The Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study is being carried out in accordance with Schedule B of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (October 2000, as amended 2007, 2011 & 2015), which is an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The first Public Information Centre was held on June 27, 2017 to obtain public and stakeholder input. Underwood cautioned any one who would judge victims of these scams noting the fraud sters have scripts they follow that are specifically designed to get a person's co-operation. "The belief is that you have some grubby criminal on the other end of the phone with no business acumen or training or formal education who is trying to rip you off," said Underwood. "The reality is these people are quite often set up in call cen tres overseas. These businesses hire staff and give them scripts to follow and procedures to fol low. They know psychological tricks to make the person be lieve what they are being told is true and real. "This is what these guys do for a living and they are very good at it." Paula said she wants banks and convenience stores to put more safeguards in place to stop scammers from defrauding se niors like her mother. She says a senior withdraw ing $10,000 at a time or buying thousands of dollars worth of iTunes cards should be an indi cator that something is wrong and prompt some stronger questioning by employees. Wendy is calling on her fel low seniors to not be pressured if they get this type of call. "Check everything out be fore you make a move. Verify," she said. "If anyone tells you not to tell someone something that is probably a red flag." Underwood noted that if scammers tricked victims into sending them money via West ern Union between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 19, 2017 those victims can now file a claim to get their money back. Claims must be filed by May 31. To find out more visit the Ca nadian Anti-Fraud Centre at http://www.antifraudcentre- centreantifraude.ca/index- eng.htm.
