Born at Mount Sinai at 38 weeks, Mikayla was im­ mediately whisked to Sick Children's Hospital in To­ ronto. Fortunately, doctors there were able to pre­ scribe a drug that keeps her heart rate stable. Unfortunately, that drug is no longer covered under the new OHIP+ plan. Although drugs for those under 25 are now free, propranolol, in a com­ pounded liquid form so they can squirt it into her mouth through a syringe, is not. While the pill form of the drug is covered, that doesn't help Mikayla since she can't swallow a pill. She requires the medica­ tion three times a day. Michael, who is an in­ surance broker at Johnson Insurance, said his drug insurance plan is covering the drug - which is more than $100 for each renewal - but only for six months. Af­ ter that they're on their own. But Michelle, who was diagnosed with the same condition after she attend­ ed her first blood donor clinic at St. Ignatius of Loy­ ola Catholic Secondary School, refuses to accept that. "I want it added to the list, so we don't have to worry about this," she said. "My daughter's life counts on this." She said she contacted Halton MPP Indira Nai- doo-Harris's office on many occasions, and now has a meeting scheduled with her this week. "OHIP + represents the government's commit­ ment to building a stron­ ger, healthier Ontario. For the first time ever, we are now covering more than 4,400 drugs province wide, which are being provided to youth and families," said Naidoo-Harris. "By creat­ ing a system in which young people have imme­ diate access to the medica­ tion they need, we are in­ vesting in the future of the province." Michelle is hopeful that she will get some positive answers, as she fights for her bubbly, smiling daugh­ ter, who has been full of life since day one. When she was born, she was immediately taken to the resuscitation rooms at Sick Kids to be assessed; she spent only three days there, and her parents were taught how to watch for heart failure and how to take her heart rate. Over the course of 18 months, she's worn 17 heart Holters, and been in and out of hospital numer­ ous times, earning her many beads on her bravery bead chain. Now, Mikayla wears a Fitbit. Her parents joking­ ly say "it's because she's a lazy two-year-old," when strangers ask why a tod­ dler would need to wear an exercise monitor. In fact, it helps them to track her heart rate.
