Two flu-related deaths in Halton reported so far this season NEWS There have been two in­ fluenza-related deaths in Halton this season, both among older adults, ac­ cording to the Halton Re­ gion health department. Flu activity continues to be widespread in the re­ gion; 422 cases of flu have been confirmed since Sept. 1, with the majority of those cases among adults aged 65 and over. This number reflects all influ­ enza cases, including those from regional hospitals that were confirmed through testing at a public health laboratory. The number of flu cases may actually be higher be­ cause not everyone seeks medical attention or may not be tested to confirm in­ fluenza. The number of cases has varied from week to week, so the peak is difficult to predict; last season the peak occurred at the start of January, said Dr. Hami- dah Meghani, Halton Re­ gion's Medical Officer of Health. "Although there are sta­ tistics on reported cases, it is difficult to determine with certainty whether this year's influenza sea­ son is worse than last year in both the general and long-term care popula­ tions." Variability between flu seasons comes down to many factors including the circulating strains, vac­ cine effectiveness and the age groups most affected each year, she said. Typically, a peak of in­ fluenza A is followed by a peak of influenza B activi­ ty, however, this season the influenza B strain began circulating earlier than in past seasons, said Megha- ni. "This season we have seen a mix of the two strains." Since the start of the flu season, 40 influenza out­ breaks have been con­ firmed in long-term care homes, retirement resi­ dences and hospitals, up from last season when 28 outbreaks at institutions were reported at this time, but equal to the number of institutional outbreaks in the 2014-15 flu season, ac­ cording to the health de­ partment.
