Both municipalities are mak­ ing plans to control the Gypsy moth before it can wreak havoc on parts of their respective tree canopies. However, they will be taking different approaches this spring to trying to limit the damage done by the moth when it is in its rav­ enous leaf-eating caterpillar stage. Oakville town officials plan an aerial spraying while Burlington will use truck-mounted sprayers. The spraying is expected to be conducted in both areas some­ time in May. The European Gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, is considered a pest as, in the caterpillar stage, it feeds on deciduous (leafy) leaves causing defoliation.
